Rhodochrosite (Jam)
Bio engineer (becomes a mechanical engineer later)
Their name came from their colour. It reminded Grace of the Jam his grandma used to make.
Atacamite (Moss)
Biologist (becomes a botanist when Grace starts to teach them about Earth)
Grace saw them and said: "Moss rock!"
Linarite (Az)
Biochemist (becomes a pilot later)
Grace actually confused them for azurite, which happens in real life as well, and when he found out, it was too late and he was already used to calling them Az.
They started out as biologists that helped build the dome and make things for Grace. But they were later chosen for a sudden mission to try and get closer to Earth. But they needed a pilot, an engineer, and a biologist and not just three biologists. And since they didn't want to part for the mission, they relearned to be those things (except Moss, they stayed a biologist) so that they could all go on the mission.
They're also all mates which is one of the reasons they didn't want to part for the mission. The other reason is that they all secretly think the others in the polycule are a little stupid. It's just that "Everyone is so weird, thank god I'm normal" meme.
