Monita Tahalea - Waltz for Debby @ Mostly Jazz 27/04/13 [HD]
Porgy and Bess. To me is a wack urban fiction by some 1930s white dudes who wanted to blow up. The original novel is sus because of who wrote it. Can you please not? Because DuBose is a white observer to the life of Black People in Charleston. You really think that he saw the truth in those people's lives?!? He was inspired by a newspaper story for chrissakes!!! And the Gershwins. Wanted to be taken seriously as creators of opera. Where is their reason to tell this story about these Black people tho? I keep reading that they had a fondness for these characters and shyt like that. Like my 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER SAID: you don't get extra credit for treating your characters with humanity. Thats just being a person. But. So many Black Artists that I respect have associated themselves with this piece of art. From Ella Fitzgerald to Ronald K. Brown. Is this like a nigga takeover? Its similar. How are we all down with THIS particular piece of art as the rep of Black people on broadway and touring the world? What about this story and its history needs to be perpetuated? There is evidence all around us of other characters that could take Porgy's and Bess' place in the canon of broadway musicals about Black life. I wanna talk about these questions I have while respecting the artists who paved the way for me to even have the clout to ask the questions. ASÈ! Now the Ordway aint tryna hear nothin about Miss Saigon when the AsianAm community is talking. I see them throwing a LOT of respect toward the AfricanAmerican community with the Vision Council, but we are also not asking them to kick them Catfish Row nigras to the curb either. I wonder what would happen if we did...
We saw Bonobo at the Mostly Jazz Festival in Birmingham last night, so I thought I'd share my favourite track off of North Borders. Here's Know You.
