_ .✰ ˏˋ ZHAO YI ˎˊ˗ Death's hand against her has always been gentle. She had been in a constant cycle of death and rebirth for as long as she can remember -- the days of her humanity long gone. In it's place was left this odd, liminal being who was not quite human but not quite Death either. She toed the line so much that all sense of her belonging had faded away until the world continued to pass and blur around her.
It wasn't until she met him that she found that she was suddenly aware of the world around her again.
He is battled-hardened, fingertips rough with all of the horror that he saw day in and day you. She could pretend that she understood every inch of his depth but that would be a lie. Every time she spoke with him, every moment she spent in his presence, she would learn something new about him. It made her days a bit brighter, monotonous landscapes finally bleeding colors she hadn't seen in centuries.
Though this time, it seems, he would learn something new about her.
The ravages of a battle that had burned the world into ashes would warm her cold body as it laid against the ground. No life, no breath, nothing that would show that she was alive and well. How long she had stayed there, she does not know. It could have been hours, minutes, or days before the process began again.
Whatever wounds she had would stitch together. Her heart would begin to churn again, slow and quiet until it was conducive to life once more. Broken bones would snap into place, her chest would begin to rise and fall again, and then she would suddenly gasp and her eyes would snap open as if she were seeing the world again.
It was quite the process to witness, she knows. How many people had run screaming from her when they saw her survive such fatal wounds? How many had cursed and spit in her direction, claiming her to be more demon than woman? She'd mentioned more than once to him that she was not....normal. That was perhaps the nicest way to say it, if she was being honest. She is not human nor spirit...she is something wholly unique.
That's why she throws herself in the way of danger even when he is capable of handling himself. It is why she lay there broken at all. Though, just as always, she comes to life again after the fires has gone cold and the bodies have been collected.
It is why she is here now, smile feeble for a few moments.
"I'm here..." her voice is a whisper, slightly hoarse as if she had not used it in years, but the kindness in her tone is always there. Soft digits carefully trailing the length of his jaw. It's almost as if she wanted to convince herself that she was really alive, almost as much as she wanted to convince him. Abnormal hues carefully take in every inch of him, living and breathing, scalding under her touch. As if the same inferno would overtake her now.
Then, as easy as she did anything else, she presses her lips against his own. The movement soft, barely there. Much like her, herself. Though she takes a moment to indulge some part of her that likes the feeling, nipping at his lower tier gently and almost playfully. "You...can't get rid of me. I'll always come back."
She promised.
