On Tuesday we climbed Mt. Takao, just 50 minutes west of Tokyo. Such a beautiful mountain steeped in deep history. The weather was unrelentingly hot but it worked in our favour because there was practically no one climbing at the same time as us. We were able to enjoy the absolute silence that comes with being in the middle of jungle on the side of a mountain.

We walk the path one step at a time, putting one foot in front of the other. We never know what could be around the corner but we just keep moving forward. Soon enough we look back snd we have climbed a whole mountain. We can conquer any mountain and we can overcome any obstacle but we have to walk that path. “No one saves us but ourselves. 不動明王 Fudou Myou with 2 Tengu guarding the stupa which holds a relic of the Buddha. About 3/4 of the way up Takao mountain in Hachioji on the outskirts of Tokyo. Being a Saturday it was pretty busy with many hikers and tourists but this area of the temple was very serene and quiet. Fudou Myou is an important figure in Japanese Buddhism especially within the #Vajrayana or #shingon sects. Mount Takao

Last Sunday we took a great day trip to hike Mount Takao, a small mountain on the edge of Tokyo. We took our local train line about an hour east, through greater Tokyo megalopolis until we reached the mountains.

We took a beautiful trail up along a river bed and were rewarded with great views of Tokyo and nearby mountains from the top (also ice cream)! We took a different route down and got to some interesting temples and shrines, plus more great views.

This was a perfect day trip and great way to get out doors!

I've spent the past few days walking ridiculous amounts around Japan. Haven't been putting aside time/energy for Instagram or other forms of movement. Until today. Saw the opportunity to have fun with my gimbal while running up this massive and scenic set of stairs, couldn't resist. My body has always been naturally inclined to shorter bursts of activity, rather than endurance activities. I'd much rather run up something like this in 30 seconds than trudge up it and feel exhausted.
