Mugshot Monday - “Black Lives Matter” coffee mug with Wonderland Espresso Blend by Peace Coffee
Yesterday at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, a majority of Minneapolis City Council members pledged to 'begin the process of ending' the Minneapolis Police Department.
There’s going to be A TON of work to figure out how that happens, but this is great news.
KUDOS to the Reclaim the Block organization and to Black Visions Collective Director Kandace Montgomery and to all the thousands protestors for pushing this. Our city needs this.
I had given up on reforming the Minneapolis Police Department, but I shouldn’t have. I’m planning to learn more about these proposed changes so I can participate in the discussion. (MPD150.com is a great resource to learn more about what abolishing the police means.)
When I think about the last few weeks here in Minneapolis, I’m sad. And I’m angry. Another black man died at the hands of the police. This keeps happening and it needs to stop.
The blame for the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing violence in Minneapolis rests squarely on the shoulders of the Minneapolis Police Department.
We needed them to protect and serve our community and they not only failed us, they harmed us. No accountability for murdering a black man. No interest in healing through dialogue with our community.
No plan, other than to provoke peaceful protestors with violence. Unacceptable.
Our system of policing here in Minneapolis is not keeping us safe. Especially within our black communities. And that needs to change. It sounds like we are at the beginning of that actually happening this time.
I'll say it again, because it's so damn important: Black Lives Matter.
PS: This mug was a prototype I made using a blank mug and dry erase markers. I made it when Philando Castile was shot and killed by a police officer here in Minnesota in 2016. The officer was acquitted of charges brought against him.

It seems like if you are actually a well-meaning person who doesn’t support police abolition, you should still find the movement reassuring. We’ve poured like 200 years into a system that has never worked, so you should at least be able to get on board with people who can admit when something isn’t working and change. I can have some faith that if the replacement doesn’t initially work, they’ll make more changes until it does.
“What does a police-free world look like?”
I created this comic for a police abolition initiative I’m a part of: MPD150. 2017 is the 150th anniversary of the Minneapolis Police Department, and at this historic moment, we’re calling for an end of an era of policing in Minneapolis and around the world.
Comic v 2.0 feat. type-set, shorter quotes, and melanin. ;)
New post on why I'm supporting MPD150's efforts to imagine-- and help move toward-- a police-free future.
If you're down with that, there's a link in here to help support this work. If you're not down with that, or have questions, there are also links to some great FAQs and readings/resources for more information on what "police-free future" actually means.
