THIS. FAMILY.
Kang-bae // Deok-hwa [MPUB and Goblin parallels] [alt. title - Yook Sung-jae is a heavenly being]
Mystic Pop Up Bar really went and gave us a great show that didn't have a bittersweet ending huh?
They really went and did that.
Revolutionary.
mpub is proof that you don’t need a kiss to have a palpable romance therefore if your characters can’t love each other through anything except putting their mouths together then that’s bad writing and bad acting and goodbye
What I’m Currently Watching (Sept-2020)
DRAMAS I’M CURRENTLY WATCHING Qing Qing Zi Jin - A would-be scholar turned mountain bandit holds college students for ransom, meets the woman of his dreams, fakes his death, and goes back to school so he can be with the woman he loves. She’s okay with everything but the fake death. It’s cute. It’s fun. They have good chemistry. There’s fun battle scenes. Please go watch it so I don’t have to be a fandom of one.
Dance Of The Phoenix - A martial arts goddess has her magical abilities stolen by a rival who wants her life, becomes sort of mortal, still falls in love with the same prince and goes back. ... this is complicated. I want to love this one. It has a ton of potential. But, really, the evil princeling who isn’t actually that evil is carrying this entire show on his back and the main hero is dull and has chemistry with no one. #TeamPrinceOfDemons
Flower Of Evil - I didn’t mean to watch this one because it sounds super tragic and scary... a police detective is investigating a serial killer who might be her husband... but there’s a twist, and it works, and I love them, and if there isn’t a happy ending I shall riot some more than I am currently rioting over the conditions in the world. Excellent chemistry. So much love.
Maiden Holmes - This looked cute and quirky and someone said it reminded them of Under The Power/Under The Brocade Robes and... yes! So many of my favorite tropes! Battle couple! Found family! Soft For One Person Only! And the chemistry between the leads works for me. I’m really enjoying this one.
PLANNING TO WATCH: The Long Ballad - When here family is murdered Dilraba Dilmurat does what she does best... she dresses as a man, grabs a sword, plans revenge, and makes a rival king fall in love with her (this better be a romance) as the drama gods intended. Lots of tropes I love. One of my favorite actresses. I’m in.
SF8 - I have no clue what the plot is but the GIFs look cool so I might pick it up.
Alice - Is about time travel. Guess what I do for an actual living? No, not time travel... I write about time travel! My first novel series (which is getting re-released in 2021) is about time travel! It’s on my list to go watch as soon as I can handle actual reality. Maybe after November...
WATCHED AND ENJOYED: Crash Landing On You - My favorite early-2020 drama! So good! So many tropes! It wasn’t a perfect ending but I enjoyed the chemistry of the cast and the realistic angles of the relationship. No, it wasn’t a perfect storybook ending but that’s because life isn’t a fairy tale.
It’s Okay To Not Be Okay - Perfection. Such. Good. Writing. Amazing acting. Beautiful costumes. Excellent message. Perfect ending. This was one of the rare dramas that is technically flawless. They brought their A game to every episode and the characters were fully realized. It’s all about storytelling, mental health, and loving yourself. Go watch it. Also... some of the best kiss scenes in a Korean Drama bar none. Holy smokes!
Mystic Pop Up Bar - Sometimes a family is an angry, undying shamaness, the ghost of a king, their kid the tree and his girlfriend, Rock. Okay. Does it make sense? No! Is it fun? Yes! Does it have found family and a message of hope? Indeed it does!
The Ballot - I love this one but I dropped it because I live in the USA and anything with corrupt politicians hits a little too close to home. But I enjoyed the bits I managed to watch before my blood pressure shot up and made me want to rage like a volcano. There is a reason I’m watching mostly historical fantasies right now. Super cute though.
Kingdom (2) - Yes, I watched a plague show during the early days of COVID-19. Yes, that was a strange choice. But I enjoyed it. You might enjoy it to.
The Romance Of Tiger And Rose - I love this one! Oh the meta! The twists! The amazing costuming which I did a whole post on just because I was so impressed! Basically... a writer gets sucked into her own drama script where she doesn’t die as scheduled but falls in love with the lead and he falls in love with her which means the script is wrong and hilarious antics ensue as the writer tries to make everything right. It’s getting a second season so let us all all pray it’s as good as the first.
Eternal Love - This came out in 2020? It feels like forever ago... anyways, I mostly liked this. It drags in some places. I’m so very tired of that side witch whatshername and I can’t help but compare it to about three thousand other dramas. But it’s lovely and pretty and the side characters are interesting. ... it’s still not as god as It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, CLOY, or Romance Of Tiger and Rose, but not every drama can be perfect. Dilraba did her best to make this work. Once again, I was #TeamDarkPrince despite his mistakes. ETA: This did NOT come out in 2020! I got titles confused. I was right, this was made a million years ago before January 2020.
Just wanted to let everyone know that one of my favorite ships is between a rock and a tree
