I think mrs crouch birthed the worst of men and loved him anyways she loved him and nurtured him and feared him all the same she definitely also had a boys will be boys mentality that excused every heinous thing barty did unlike senior who saw exactly what kind of darkness lurked beneath
To me the only reason he didn’t do anything about barty right away is because of his wife the one thing he did was keeping him under imperius which definitely makes him a hypocrite but what can you do when your son is a sociopath who entertains himself through acts of violence?
This makes barty himself way more interesting because it makes everything he did lack motive and reason and makes his mind much more interesting to explore and it makes me wonder how that night at Azkaban really went
Did his mother actually want to take his place? Did he manipulate her? Beg her? Force her even? I personally choose to believe some weird freudian shit was going on because we don’t really have alot of that and also i can and no one can stop me
Mrs crouch vs Jocasta (odeipus’ mom/wife) 1v1 battle for who fucked up their son more
yes yes, barty’s reprehensible actions lacking any motive or reason from a ‘traumatic’ childhood makes him SO much more interesting. his mind is already so complex within that narrative, and this one pushes us to really explore him as a character and delve into the complexities of not only his own nature, but human (sociopathic??) nature itself.
jocasta and oedipus…barty and mrs crouch…oh. OH. barty with an oedipal complex…the resentment to his father? the closeness with his mother? i honestly can’t believe i’ve never thought about it this way before!!!
i have not much to add, but here’s one of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite translations of oedipus that has now taken on a new meaning for me:
“Doomed man! May you never fathom who you are!” -Jocasta (Sophocles, 1170)
