#that’s one way to try and woo a lady The Other Bennet Sister- Part 9
i really did just watch the Regency England version of a fuck boy ask Mary Bennet to be his low-commitment, casual, unmarried, situationship huh
In the middle of this show and realizing that finally a male character who is not right for the main character is not depicted as “evil” but instead whose ideas do not protect women simply because of the times in which the characters live.
Similarities between Mr. Ryder and Mr. Bennet
These two couldn't be more different in terms of personality, but I find it interesting how their actions have (or in Ryder's case, would have had) similar results.
Mr. Bennet put no effort into providing for his children's future. He is entirely focused on the now, despite having full knowledge of what will happen to his family when he dies. He's not an evil man by any means, but his complacency hurts them.
Mr. Ryder is also focused on the here and now to the detriment of those he loves. He asks Mary to run away with him, ignoring the pain it would end up causing her. I have no doubt his love for Mary was genuine, but his actions would still hurt her. She would have lost all her social standing, her connections, and quite possibly her family too. If she outlived him, she would have had no legal claim on any of his estate, leaving her destitute. If they had any children, they'd be in the same position.
Neither of these men are monsters. Both make decisions that cause damage, and in both cases, the price is (or would have been) paid by Mary (and her mother and sisters in Mr. Bennet's case)
I actually like these characters, but this realisation does feel like another reason why Tom was the right choice. Someone else on this website (sorry I can't remember who), mentioned that part of what attracted Lizzie to Darcy may have been his responsibility. Maybe this is also true of Mary.
Watching The Other Bennet Sister and really needing Ryder to STFU and go away. Mr. Just Be My Mistress needs to get the hell on. 😒
I am going to strangle Ryder
Uh, this is hilarious
