Once I heard there was a #TonyGwynnStadium, I had to see it for myself. Growing up in San Diego and being a sports fan can be a tough combination. We’re not necessarily known for championships (cuz we don’t have any major ones!). But where we do lack in trophies, we more than made up for it in Hall of Fame athletes who transcended their given games. None more than Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres. For one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, he always came across as a normal guy you could easily approach, get an autograph, and have a conversation with about anything baseball. He never chased the big contracts and left our city for more fame and better shots at a title. Heck, he even coached one of our college teams once he retired. You rarely see that anymore in the big business know as sports. Maybe he had a sense of loyalty? Maybe it’s just that hard to leave the paradise that is San Diego? I’d like to believe that the fans there became his family because he was so involved and intertwined into the community. Money wasn’t his driving force. Maybe the fans that embraced him and showed up at all of his signings at card shows & car dealerships were? As a young kid, I loved the guy and all he stood for. As a sports fan, his ability to hit the ball with ease as if it were a huge beach ball left me in awe. As a person, his loyalty to the city and its fans meant more than what he did on the field. I might be a tortured soul for not witnessing a bunch of championships, but I sure am lucky that we had one Tony Gwynn. ‘Mr. Padre’ would’ve turned 60 this past weekend. Here’s my little artistic tribute to my favorite athlete done with a nod to @toppsproject2020 . If you haven’t seen it, they’re doing an amazing reimagining of 20 iconic rookie cards done by 20 well-known artists.
