Kaladesh Karacteristic Kreature Konundrum
Creature types have been a part of Magic from the very beginning. While the mechanical relevance of creature types varies from one set to another, but the flavor relevance is consistently a major part of world building on virtually every plane.
A few blocks (like Lorwyn and Innistrad) have a "tribal theme" that feature creature type as a major focus of set design. More often though, a set will include some tribal synergy for one or two creature types, but not as a major focus. (For example Minotaur tribal in Theros and Warrior tribal in Tarkir.)
My point is, creature types might matter less in some sets, but they always MATTER.
Other than Humans, Thopters, and Constructs though, I have NO idea what kinds of creature types to expect on Kaladesh. Specifically which characteristic creature types.
For those not familiar with the term "Characteristic Races" are humanoid creature types that typically show up in specific colors at common. Though it's not often that all five will appear in a single block, most sets feature at least two or three.
Currently, the five characteristic races are:
Of all the humanoid creatures in Magic Origins, the only ones from Kaladesh were humans.
That in and of itself isn't really an issue. (With ten different planes featured in Magic Origins, we only scratched the surface of Kaladesh.)
But what is an issue is that given the real-world cultural influences for Kaladesh, it doesn't seem like any of the other four characteristic races would really fit there.
So what will we see? Is this going to be a set with only humans, artifacts, and non-sapient creature types? Will we some of the beloved alternative characteristic races like Viashino, Thrull, Djinn, Fungus, etc? Or will we see the introduction of some entirely new humanoid creature types?!
I genuinely have no idea what to expect, and I'd love to get everyone's thoughts. The first Kaladesh spoilers start next week, so this is our last chance to share truly baseless predictions.
