mtg book report, entry 19: dochyel’s ride by david m. honigsberg
honigsberg, david m. “dochyel’s ride.” magic the gathering: tapestries: an anthology, edited by kathy ice, harpercollins, 1995, pp. 123-140
gobbies!!!
i was initially a bit put off by how professional the goblin military was depicted as here. like, gobbies should be chaotic and messy, y’all! but dochyel is just the goodest boy, and seeing him thrive and gain the respect of his peers and even one of his childhood heroes just made for such a surprisingly warm and fuzzy story.
it feels pretty appropriate that an anthology written in this era of magic has a story about elves and a story about goblins as two of its indisputable home runs. and now every time i see a copy of goblin rock sled i’ll think about dochyel and how he’s the goodest boy! and his reunion with his childhood friend thurka! love to have fully formed feelings about one of the silliest magic cards.
