The wonderful Mukhadram at Shadwell.

His name is Arabic and is used “to describe an experienced, revered, respected or talented person” - he lived up to it on the course, I am excited to see how well he does at stud.

Not only has Sheikh Hamdan's super filly Taghrooda been retired from racing today, 13 October 2014, the sheikh's Mukhadram has been retired as well.

Mukhadram’s final race was to be the Champion Stakes at Ascot on 18 October, but “it became apparent the ground would be too soft for him to contest his end of season target …” Read more here.

"Mukhadram's retired too. It's too wet at Ascot, but he's been a tough, consistent performer and he's a fine, big, good-looking horse so we hope he'll appeal to breeders," said the sheikh's racing manager Angus Gold.

While Taghrooda will join her owner’s broodmare band, Mukhadram will be retired to his owner's Shadwell Stud.

The William Haggas-trained son of Shamardal and Magic Tree, foaled on 6 April 2009, is the winner of five races from 16 starts, including the 2012 Wood Ditton Stakes, 2013 Brigadier Gerard Stakes and this year’s Coral-Eclipse Stakes. He ran second in the 2013 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes behind Al Kazeem, third in the 2013 Coral-Eclipse also behind Al Kazeem, second to African Story in the 2014 Dubai World Cup and third behind Taghrooda in the King George VI and Queen Elizabets Stakes. He won £1,968,250 in pricemoney.

Verrazano has been retired after a minor injury was discovered after the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on 5 July 2014. 

"Verrazano was found to be lame after the Eclipse and although it is not a significant injury, time would not permit us to have him ready for the Breeders' Cup, so the decision has been made to retire him. It's very disappointing as he ran two lovely races on his first two starts for us and we had been looking forward to a great season with him." said trainer Aidan O'Brien.

After some consideration was given to retire Verrazano after last season, Coolmore ultimately decided to ship the four-year-old to Europe in Aidan O'Brien's care and let him run on turf this season.  However, he did not win over the turf, but finished third to Olympic Glory in the Lockinge Stakes, ans was runner-up to Olympic Glory's stablemate Toronado in the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting. In his third start in Europe, and last start ever, he finished ninth in the Coral Eclipse to Mukhadram. 

The son of More Than Ready and Enchanted Rock, a daughter of Giant's Causeway, trained by Todd Pletcher was one of the leading colts of his generation, going undefeated into the Kentucky Derby, where he tasted defeat for the first time. He then won the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth.

Verrazano returned to Grade 1 competition in the Haskell Invitational Stakes, also at Monmouth, which he won by nine and three quarter lengths, the biggest winning margin in the race's history. Verrazano started as the favourite in the Travers Stakes in a field of nine, including Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice. Verrazano faded in the straight and finished seventh behind the eventual American Three-year-old Champion Colt Will Take Charge. Verrazano's final race of the year 2013 was the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Again he started as the favourite, but struggled to match the early pace and finished fourth behind Goldencents. With regular jockey John Velazquez injured, Verrazano was ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct in late November. He finished third out of ten runners behind Flat Out.

He will stand at Ashford Stud in Kentucky next season.

2014 Epsom Oaks heroine Taghrooda with Paul Hanagan and John Gosden in the Winners' enclosure at Ascot, after she beat the boys on her own age and older in the King George And Queen Elizabeth Stakes to become the first three-year old filly since 1976 to win, 26 July 2014. This was her fourth start, and her fourth victory.

Telescope second, Mukhadram third.

Taghrooda is such a lovely lady. <3 Congratulations to all connections! :-)
