Forest Whitaker Joins 'Empire' for Multi-Episode Arc

The Oscar winner will play a prolific producer who gave Lucious (Terrence Howard) his first big break.

Another Oscar winner is coming to Empire.

Forest Whitaker has signed on for a multi-episode arc on season four of the Fox hip-hop drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Whitaker will play Uncle Eddie, a charismatic music icon and bona fide hitmaker who gave an unknown Lucious  (Terrence Howard) his first radio airplay way back when. Decades later, Eddie steps up for Lucious at a critical moment during his rehabilitation, and a grateful Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) invites him to produce a song in celebration of Empire Entertainment’s 20th anniversary.

The season-four premiere of Empire, set for Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, sees Lucious make his first public appearance after the explosion in Las Vegas, while all members of the Lyon family have their own interests in Lucious regaining his physical and mental faculties. (Additionally, Empire’s season-four premiere is one part of a two-show crossover with time slot companion Star.)

Whitaker joins Demi Moore, who made her debut in the season-three finale of the 20th Century Fox Television drama as a nurse aiding Lucious in his recovery after the explosion, setting up a major season-four role.

Since its phenomenal launch in January 2015, Empire has continued to lure top talent for guest-starring roles, including Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Eva Longoria, Taye Diggs, Alicia Keys, Rosie O’Donnell and Ludacris, among others.

The role reunites Whitaker with Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, with whom he worked on the feature The Butler. Following his Oscar-winning role in The Last King of Scotland, the actor’s recent film roles include Arrival and Rogue One. His TV work includes the recent Roots remake, The Shield, ER and the short-lived Criminal Minds spinoff Suspect Behavior. Whitaker is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Ziffren Brittenham.
