Darwinia – Origin of a species
Game: Darwinia
Price: 1200 MSP / £10.20
Genre: Real time strategy
Gameplay: Darwinia is all about controlling 'little computer people'. The problem is they're pretty much defenceless to any and all of the perils their world has created for them. This is where you 'the player' come in.
Using squads packing lasers and grenades you have to clear the way for them, then order them where you want them to go by promoting one of there kin, who essentially get the job of holding a giant sign saying: 'go this way please'.
If this sounds simple, it's because it is. The interest comes from the tasks and progression you make through the worlds.
Multiwinia is a much more hands on affair. You can command the groups of 'little computer people' who will attack enemies on sight and can be ordered into powerful formations. This mode offers a variety of interesting modes, such as variants on capture the flag and zone control.
Visuals and Sound: The visuals have a very distinct polygonal feel to them, some where akin to Tron but sadly everything just looks rather dull and flat; the colour scheme doesn't help and the overall look is far less exciting than it should be.
The music switches between epic chip-tune and orchestral, which is a slightly odd mix but works okay.
There are a number of annoying sound effects, mostly the noise when you kill one of the viruses, which is an ear piercing screech. That said the ambient effects are quite nice.
Like it:
Easy to get to grips with.
Plenty of modes to try.
Loathe it:
Quite difficult to win, particularly on Multiwinia.
Not exactly fast paced.
Commanding all you Darwinians can get to be quite a chore.
Worth a purchase?: Much has been made of the 'little computer people' of Darwnia. But when it gets down to it this is basically a diet RTS with some swanky visuals, which personally I don't think are that great.
If you're a genre fan you'll probably find it simplistic and if you're not this game won't win you over no matter how hard it tries.
Rating: 3/5
GoG.com has a summer indie sale bundle featuring the 3 really famous games of Introversion, Multiwinia, Uplink and Defcon as well as the awesome adventure game Gemini Rue! Got get it now for $17.96!
Hello everyone! I've been a fan of the Humble Indie Bundle and Introversion Software for quite some time and I decided to buy 2 copies (not including with my own) of the Humble Introversion Bundle.
I wanted to share in the Holiday Spirit by giving away those two copies of the bundle to the people here on Tumblr because I love these games, they are some of my most favorite games of all time and I want you to share the experience of these great indie titles.
I don't want to go into great detail with this because it's going to fill up your dashboards and I don't want to do that. Basically, Uplink is a hacking simulator game. Loads of fun. Hack stuff, hide your tracks so people can't trace back to you, do missions, follow the storyline (if you want), upgrade your computer and network, buy new programs to hack, spoof your voice and call peoples phones and extract information, fake peoples deaths by hacking into databases, hack bank accounts, delete rival companies files... you know, just the usual "hacking" stuff that is embraced in films.
Darwinia is hard to describe. According to Wikipedia, "Darwinia does not fall into any one game genre, as it mixes elements from strategy, action, puzzle, hacker, and God games alike. The player has the ability to run several programs through the Task Manager (a reference to the Windows Task Manager), similar to units used in many real time strategy games. Research allows the player to upgrade programs and weapons, which is critical as the enemy develops. Mission Objectives are given at each location/level, as the player and the Darwinians attempt to wipe out the Viruses." You pretty much save a virtual world from Viruses. Fun stuff, rated very highly by numerous computer game magazines and a 5/5 on Xplay and stuff.
Defcon is an amazing Multiplayer War Game. You take control of a part of the world, place your structures, defend your cities, and prevent the enemy from killing your citizens... with Nukes. Wage Thermonuclear War from the comfort of your room. Imagine a giant map of the world in the style of War-Games, and you'll get an idea of how this game looks like. Its a simple game to learn, but the depth behind it is ridiculous. Attacking leaves you open to Counter Attacks. Forge alliances, break them apart and nuke each other for flying or sailing too close to each others continent. Loads of Fun.
Multiwinia is a multiplayer game like Darwinia. You control the little creatures you saved in Darwinia except they have split into tribes and now you must guide your tribe to victory versus other players. Easy controls, hilarious combat, flying lasers, grenades, napalm strikes, nukes (with subs launching them as a reference to Defcon). Fun fun fun fun!
