A true Bandcampsnoop end-around. What I really want to post is The Monks' classic "Black Monk Time" (so that link takes you to the YouTube album), but that doesn't exist in audio form on Bandcamp. Munster Records has recently repressed another reissue that IS on Bandcamp but with no audio. Light in the Attic also reissued this back in 2016, but theirs is a 2 LP version - also not on Bandcamp. The original came out in 1966 and is probably out of the price range of most of us.

The Monks are one of those bands you hear a lot about - they are important - and in this case, all the hype tracks. This absolutely sounds like a 1960s release, but from the unhinged side. Think of The Doors, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band crossed with Chuck Berry. After listening to "Black Monk Time" you can absolutely see where bands like The Stooges, the recently posted Mirrors, and even the Feelies got part of their inspiration.

Part of the mystique of The Monks is their origin story. 5 military G.I.s stationed in Germany created this? I love that Third Man Records gave us this sweet 5 song "Hamburg Recordings 1967" in digital form.

En el revival mod estaban The Jam y los demás, en el garaje de los 80 estaban Lyres y los demás, porque, aún teniendo como base los años sesenta, Lyres no era un grupo de revival sino mucho más que eso. 

Munster Records sacó hace unos meses la increíble box set “Lucky 7″ con siete de los mejores singles y EPs del grupo de Jeff Conolly.

A couple of weeks ago, I said there's nothing wrong with Teenage Fanclub worship. I'd like to recycle that idea...but this time, there's nothing wrong with Beatles worship.

We All Together (Lima, Peru) released this gem in 1972 - clearly and proudly influenced by both The Beatles and Paul McCartney's first solo album. I mean, there is a song on this called "Hey Revolution" and members released a Beatles cover album under the moniker "The Beatles (Sounds Alike)".

Munster Records (Madrid, Spain) is reissuing this. I've really been enjoying this along with another new reissue from Munster - Stiv Bators.

4/30/24.

Well, this was unexpected. Not the source, but the product. Munster Records (Spain) has made a habit of obscure reissues from around the world. Often those reissues are from the 1960s and 1970s. So, "It's A Beautiful Day" - a compilation of Peruvian bands from the 1970s was not a surprise. But I was not really expecting the soft rock/psych folk/yacht rock/AOR rock sound.

These bands were definitely a product of their time - think Crosby, Still and Nash or America. But these songs sound like they could be from current Curation Records bands Beachwood Sparks or Gospelbeach. Brent Rademaker take note!

11/29/23.

The Zeros were a Chula Vista, California based band. They formed in 1976 and from the looks of their Discogs page they were a singles band.

Munster Records (Madrid, Spain) is reissuing their first 3 singles - released between 1977 and 1980. They definitely worked the punk sound associated with The Ramones. But I kind of feel that this sound never really went away - bands like Uni Boys and Billy Tibbals recall this guitar driven punk pop.

Big Star's "Third" or "Sister Lovers" is just an amazing album. I forgot how much I loved the song "Jesus Christ" until I saw this 7" from Munster Records (a "sister" label of Vampisoul?).

This is officially an Alex Chilton release with "Singer Not the Song" and "All of the Time" (both "unplugged") being included. Alex Chilton influenced many - Scott Miller of Game Theory come immediately and prominently to mind.

Munster and Vampisoul are based in Madrid, Spain.

8/12/22.

Recently we posted about a 7" reissue on Munster Records (Madrid, Spain). The band was Empire and they shared members with legendary band Generation X.

Munster is now releasing "Expensive Sound" the full length originally released in 1981. There are so many great sounds - the Bandcamp page mentions, "While “Expensive Sound” may be better known for the bands it inspired — the neo-psychedia of The Stone Roses and the athletic fretwork of Fugazi - they deserve appreciation on its own merits."

While perusing Munster's catalogue I highly recommend getting the 3x7" packs - prices range from 9 to 17 euros. I bought the post-punk pack and am loving it. I'm pretty sure I'll get the Dangerhouse 3 pack too.'
