Part 1 (of I think 3) wrapping up 2022 journals and starting 2023! I finished up my December reading “shelfie” with 16 books, to make 178 books on the year. I had a lot of re-reads just because of stress with Book Lovers by Emily Henry “winning” at 7 re-reads between January (when I read the galley and sobbed in the bath) and October (re-read again via audio while driving back and forth to help with my parents’ house and things). All reading is reading, re-reads included. And then that’s it for 2022! I used EVERY page in my @archerandolive A5 Narwhal notebook. That’s 192 pages 😹 (I did do a bunch of swatching in the back but still - I’ve never filled up a journal before). daisy - what’s your best childhood memory?

The week leading up to my 7th birthday, hands down.

My birthday is July 7th, and I was born in 1990. Thus I turned 7 on 7/7/1997, and my mom was big into lucky numbers and shit. SO she decided that we should celebrate 7 Days of Birthday. Like 12 Days of Christmas but so much better because it was just for me! Every day of the week leading up to my birthday, she gave me a gift, of increasing value, and I was just THRILLED by this.

Now, by what I just told you, you might (reasonably) assume that we were well off.

But that would be incredibly wrong lmao. I grew up absolutely dirt fucking poor. I wore nothing but hand-me-downs for most of my childhood and teenage years, we got regularly evicted, my mom was in and out of rehab (and occasionally jail), and we lacked a lot of things because of our circumstances. Groceries, heat in the winter, air conditioning in the summer, cable, internet. We didn't lose out on all of these all the time thank God, but my access to them was intermittent and unreliable.

All this to say, I knew growing up that I was Very Poor. And when my mom bought me a gift every day for 7 days leading up to my birthday, I knew that it was super special. We didn't really have the money for it, but she made it work anyway because she wanted me to have an unforgettable birthday.

And she pulled it off. It was unforgettable, and when I think about my favorite childhood memories, it consistently ranks at the top of the list.

My bipolar ass has to pick "Lithium" by Nirvana. Although "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is close behind it.

anemone - were you ever interested in greek mythology?

My greek mythology phase started when I was in elementary school and never ended. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh God, there are so many I love that it's hard to pick a favorite. I'm a romantic when it comes to my fiction, so the love stories got me most.

Big bad god of the underworld Hades being So Soft for Persephone!!

Orpheus's tragic devotion to Eurydice. No matter which version you prefer, he looked back because he loved her so damn much.

Penelope's faithfulness to Odysseus, and his desire to return to his wife, which was powerful enough for him to face the longest, most perilous journey to reach her.

But my favorite has to go to Eros and Psyche. I'm a ho for beauty and the beast vibes, and the Eros and Psyche myth is a forerunner of my favorite folk tale: East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

As for my favorite female character, it's for sure Aphrodite. She's a bad bitch who knows her beauty and her worth, and I deeply respect that. Aphrodite doesn't know how to do anything but Queen Shit 👑

In a surprise, my order of the new Love Lock washi and stamps from Notebook Therapy arrived yesterday (I hadn’t even got a tracking number yet, wut). So I had a little swatch session today. This set will mix so well with the Cottage Friends set that released last fall 💖💖💖 I colored in the heart-shaped “frame” stamp with my Prisma colored pencils.
