The Very Richly Decorated Hours of the Duke of Berry (Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry) is the most famous and admired masterpiece in the Château de Chantilly’s collection of books and manuscripts.  It is a book of hours created between 1412 and 1416 by the brothers Herman, Paul, and Johan Limbourg, famous Dutch miniature painters from the city of Nijmegen. These pages show the Journey of the Magi, and the Adoration of the Magi.

Attributed to René-Antoine Houasse (c. 1645-1710) “Presumed portrait of Marie Anne de La Trémoille, princesse des Ursins” (c. 1670) Oil on canvas Located in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France Marie Anne de La Trémoille, princesse des Ursins (1642-5 December 1722), was a French courtier and royal favorite known for her political influence, being a de facto ruler of Spain from 1701 until 1714. She spent most of her life as an agent of French influence abroad, at first in Rome, and then in Spain under the new Bourbon dynasty, followed by a final period at the exiled Stuart court in Rome. She played a central role at the Spanish royal court during the first years of the reign of Philip V, until she was ousted from the country following a power struggle with the new queen consort, Elisabeth Farnese.

The Gallery of Painting at the Château de Chantilly was designed by the Duke of Aumale as a showcase for the second largest collection of antique paintings in France after the Louvre Museum. In keeping with the duke’s wishes, the layout of the paintings remains unchanged since the 19th century.  His collection includes three works by Raphael.
