Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Unrelated opinion but I love protagonists who barely/don't speak at all. Not because of miscommunication though but either because they actually are mute or simply because they. think. before. they. speak.
No matter how good your dialogue skills are in Outer Worlds, you`re still completely mute outside of conversations. And it stands out, since they put so much incidental dialogue in the game.
They should have made it so that another side effect of the reanimation was that you became mute. Instead of dialogue skills you have empathy and expression. All the options are "you give them a look that says..."
That would have been a good bit.
Mad Max and Videogame Player-Characters
I saw Mad Max last week, and one of the things I noticed about it was how Max displayed the mute-videogame-protagonist plot device. Like, seriously! Max filled a similar role as Chell from Portal or Gordon Freeman from Half-Life; a silent observer, without much of a defined personality, who’s in the middle of the action but exists mostly to allow the player (or in this case, viewer) to experience the story. I’ve never seen this device used so fully in a movie, but it made for good storytelling, and has me as videogame nerd completely geeking out.
If you think about it, Furiosa was the protagonist. If Mad Max was a videogame, Max would be the player-character. Furiosa would be the one you follow through levels, and love and admire for her strength and character development. Max allows you to participate in the world. Furiosa is one of the reasons you stay.
What if the Warden does show up in DA:I, and there is a big reveal where he/she takes off their helmet and they look exactly the same (but better cause Frostbite) except there is this huge, gnarly scar across their neck/face. Now they can't speak because some stabbed them in the neck.
About 2 hours in on Transistor
It's really good, as one might expect from Supergiant especially after Bastion. Some interesting mechanics so far, I really like the whole queuing up of moves.
Although I find it an interesting design choice that in a game that involves people being silenced, the female lead is mute and all the talking is done by the male character/narrator. So far I've gotten a great sense of the nameless male's character and personality, but very little of Red's. She comes off largely as an avatar rather than a person to this point.
So I guess her voice really is pretty silenced.
