Summary:
Xiao Xingchen identifies the wounded stranger he finds from the beginning. Hesitant to kill a prisoner out of hand himself, he makes a deal with Xue Yang to preserve his conscience. Xue Yang senses an opportunity. Neither of them see what's coming.

hey yeah it’s my fic for @mxtxbb that I’ve been talking about all year
yeah so you start with a basic premise and then eight months later you have over 100k of fic that's mostly relationship development and characters talking to each other while catastrophically failing to process their own emotions. anyway I'm still a sucker for yi city arc fix-its, apologies to Song Lan who is sir not appearing in this fic, and huge, huge thanks to my artists @rakiah and Vic (@vic_draws_betah on Twitter) and my beta @ameliarating.

When it comes to canon: I'm working from novel timeline as far as order of events and events themselves go, but largely with CQL character designs and adjustment upward in age.
