2020 in Review..

I wanted to look back on this crazy year and reflect a bit, so I decided to put together a series of photo collages with some highlights from 2020.

In February, before the world shut down, and before we really were aware of Coronavirus, we took our second trip to the BVIs and chartered a sailboat for the week.

COVID happened, and apparently that means we have zero photos from March, April, or May. I transitioned to working from home on March 16th. I got pregnant in April. I found out I was pregnant in May. That was the biggest turning point of this year, hands down.

In June, B and I celebrated 8 years of marriage and my 32nd birthday. We learned how to make crespelles and manicotti from scratch and went fresh fruit picking. Low key, but lovely.

We did so much hiking. Throughout the summer and into the fall, we hiked so many trails within a state park close to home. It was the perfect way to get out of the house, do something active, and also stay safe re: COVID.

In August, we took a trip to Michigan. We outfitted the van with a lofted queen bed and drove around the entire state, camping and exploring (socially distanced). We saw the Great Lakes for the first time. We saw lots of national parks and explored a cave. We got to visit with some friends who live out there. It was wonderful.

More fresh fruit picking! Anything we did outside the house this year was done outdoors, pretty much. For Labor Day, we took a camping trip with a group of friends. We hiked into the park about 2mi and explored the falls, sat by campfires, read books, swung in hammocks, and enjoyed being in the woods.

I watched my body change this year. A LOT! This year has revolved around growing this tiny human and it’s been surreal and awesome, in the true sense of the word.

As the year came to a close, I have been less able to do things like hiking and have instead turned to crocheting as a hobby. I created an Etsy shop and completed some pretty cool projects.

And, last but not least, this fluffy duo brought me a lot of joy this year. Being home with them every day has been a nice change of pace.

There we have it. 2020 was a wild ride. My life has changed in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned a lot about my own strength, what motivates me, what is important to me, and I’ve been often reminded of the importance of friends and family, of human relationships. I’ve found this wonderful little tumblr community. Thank you all for sharing in this year with me, cheering me on, and supporting me. Your kindness and friendship is so very appreciated.

“So how much did we get from Ran?” I asked Din as we ate breakfast together while the kid was still asleep.

“Not enough, I’m going to need to pick up at least two or three more decent jobs before the bean comes so I won’t have to leave you alone with both of them alone.” He said.

I only nodded. Bounty hunting could bring plenty of money when you are only supporting yourself and sometimes another person, especially if they are bounty hunting too and bringing in their own money. But add a kid and a newborn baby into the mix, the credits just don’t last as long as they once did.

“Any ideas on where to pick one up?” Din asked me.

I thought for a moment, “There’s that one lady who always tried to sell us Spice? I mean she always paid well, never asked any questions. It’s worth contacting her. She was always fond of you.” I said teasingly.

She was an older lady and was constantly flirting with any male employer she had. It was always quite amusing to watch.

“I could what’s her name again?” Din said as he stood to put our plates in the sink.

“Mel. I’ll keep thinking of others who you might be able to ask.” I said.

I heard him walk back over to the table to grab his helmet. “I’m going to turn the light back on.” He warned me.

After my eyes adjusted to the lights, I got up and went to get the kid up. While I was in the kitchen feeding the kid breakfast, Din went up into the cockpit to try and contact Mel. The kid ate his breakfast and was ready to go play the second he was done.

“You need to wait kiddo, your dad’s trying to contact someone.” I told him as I gently stroked one of his large ears.

I listened and waited for Din to finish the transmission. Once I was sure he was done I called out to him, “Hey can you come grab the kid so we can both come up?” I asked, for his help since it was now very difficult to climb the ladder and carry the kid. It wasn’t impossible just hard and if he’s here there no harm in asking for a little bit of help.

“Yeah, be right there.” He called back.

Once we were all back up in the cockpit, the kid went straight to his play corner causing me to smile.

“So, what’d she say?” I asked as I took a seat.

“She said she has a few small jobs and their mine if I want them I just have to let her know within three hours. Did you think of anyone else I could ask?”

“What about Trak or Dra? Are you still on good terms with either of them?” I asked.

“Trak, yes, I actually did a job for him a few months before I found you. Dra depends on how much that ship cost him to fix. A mission went wrong and a group of us had to jump ship and it crashed. It wasn’t my fault but we were working together so we all got blamed. You know how that always goes.” He said and I nodded in agreeance.

“It’s worth contacting them though.” I said.

He agreed and began to make a transmission to Dra first. Unfortunately he was still very upset with the last time Din did a job for him so even if he had a job, there was no way he was giving it to DIn.

Luckily he had more luck with Trak. He welcomed Din back to do a few easy jobs that he promised would pay well, nothing illegal, just a simple scout mission, and possibly a transport. Both of us always liked working for Track, especially after we had just finished up on a job that had either ended sloppily or was slightly illegal because he always had everything planned out to a tee. He was an older gentleman, constantly smoking a cigar, he used to do these missions on his own but he had gotten too old to keep doing them so he started hiring others to do them, that’s how Din and I met him.

“So Trak doesn’t need me there for another couple of days, I could go and do the odd jobs for Mel then head to Trak’s, or just skip Mel’s all together and go straight to Trak. His jobs would pay more than enough to get us through until after the baby is born.” Din said.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with Mel’s. Her jobs are usually a little sketchy, I trust Trak more. He’s not going to scam us.” I said truthfully.

“Alright. Well, he doesn’t need me for a couple of days, but we can’t stay here. I saw some ships flying in while talking to Mel, I’m pretty sure they were carrying Imps in. I’ll try to find us somewhere to stop soon so I can make a supply run.” Din said, already working on firing up the ship.

I got up and carefully bent down to get the kid and put him into his seat while we took off. I would let him back down once we were safely cruising through space.

“You two ready?” Din asked once the ship was ready to take off.

“Let me finish strapping him in and sit down.” I said as I worked on making sure the kid was secure in his seat.

Soon we were flying through hyperspace. Din was sifting through a datapad trying to find a place to stop to refuel and go on the supply run.

“What about Tatooine? I know we were there just a while ago, but we could stop there for a bit.” Din suggested. I didn’t even need to see his face to know he had a smug look on it.

“Din, I will not hesitate to throw my data pad at you right now.” I said not even looking up from the pregnancy article I was reading.

“I’m kidding. We’re already heading for a planet that we can refuel on, it’s actually quite the opposite of Tatooine. We’re heading to Barin, it’s about 12 hours away, then from there it’s probably about another 6 in hyperspace to get to Traks. I figured depending on what time of day it is when we land, if it’s during the day, I can head out to one of the markets, and we can leave out that next morning or if it’s late when we get there I head out first thing in the morning and we could leave before night time.” Din said.

“I think that’s a great plan.” I agreed.

“Can you make sure the kid has an extra blanket tonight when he goes to bed, were getting to colder space and I don’t want him to get sick.” Din said, causing a small, soft smile to form on my lips at his concern.

“Are there still extras in the cabinet by the table?” I asked.

“There should be.” He said finally switching to autopilot and turning his chair to face mine as I set my holopad down.

“How’s your arm feeling?” He asked.

“It’s okay, a little sore but it’s fine. We should probably change the wrapping on it later.” I said.

“Okay, then once we get some bacta I can put that on it and it’ll heal quicker.” He offered.

I nodded, but my attention was soon caught by the kid making noise beside me. He was reaching out to Din and making grabby hands trying to tell him that he wanted to be held. I turned back to Din smiling.

“I think somebody wants their dad to hold them.” Teased with a small laugh.

“Alright, come to Papa.”

Din happily got up from his chair and took two long strides over to where the kid was. He picked up into his arms. I smiled and chuckled a little at the name he had given himself.

Once the child was in his arms he turned to look at me, “What’s so funny?” He asked.

“Nothing, Papa.” I said teasingly.

I could only imagine the blush he had creeping up onto his face as he paused for a moment, “Oh, that… I don’t really know where that came from.” He admitted before walking back over to sit down.

“I like it, it suits you. But why not dad or something like that?” I asked.

He was quiet for a moment, “It’s what I called my dad…”

“Well then I definitely like it, it’s really sweet.” I said.

“What about you, have you thought about what you’re going to be called?” He asked, wanting the attention off of him.

“Yes, it’s just I never felt like they were me, ya know. Like I can’t picture my baby coming up to me and calling me mommy. It just doesn’t seem right. But now I believe that if a kid has a Papa, then they’re going to need a Mama.” I said smiling widely at him.

“What do you think, kid? What do you think about Mama and Papa?” Din asked, looking down at the small green creature in his lap.

The child looked over at me and then up at Din as if he was making sure he understood who was Mama and who was Papa. After looking up at Din, he too began to smile widely at his, now appropriately named, Papa.

“I’m going to take that as yes.” Din said. I could practically hear his smile.

We continued to make small talk until my stomach grumbled fairly loudly, causing Din to laugh loudly.

“You hungry?” He asked through his laughter.

“Maybe a little.” I said, slightly embarrassed.

“I can stay with the kid up here if you want to make some food.” He suggested.

“Hold up. You must have forgotten, I won our bet. You have to cook.” I heard him playfully groan, “So, how about I stay here with the kid and you go make us some food.” I had a shit-eating grin on my face.

“Okay, okay, fair is fair. Have fun up here. The ship should be fine the coordinates are set, holler for me if something goes off on the panel.” He said standing up and handling the kid to me as he walked past.

Before he got to the ladder I heard him mumble, “You will be the death of me.”

“Oh, but you love me and you know it.” I called back as he decided into the main part of the ship.

“That I do.” I heard him say to himself just before he was out of earshot.

I couldn’t help the smile in my face as I thought to myself, “I love you too.”

2020 Albums that I listened on repeat

This is just me trying to prove myself that there are good things that happened in my 2020. I listened to a lot of new music more than last year, I watched a lot of movies and tv series more than last year, I read a lot of books and fanfictions more than last year (also now have more OTPs than last year), and more importantly I stayed on my bed more times than last year. So yeah, 2020 is not that bad :)

Blood Harmony (Deluxe) by FINNEAS

Just listening the first song and I already cried. But don't worry the rest of the songs are not that sad. It even has some.. playful lyrics? I don't know how to call it but they make me smile at some point. All of the songs also use gender-neutral pronouns, which I much appreciated.

Listening to this album is a beautiful long journey. It has 27 songs with total time 1 hr 23 min and I don't have one that I skipped. I can relate with a lot of the lyrics that she put in this album. She is one of the artist that I admired the way lyrics are written. Pick one favorite song from this album is almost impossible.

RAZZMATAZZ by I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME

I surprised myself when I found that I like this kind of genre A LOT. Thanks to tumblr that helps me found this artist. I don't know how to explain how much I love the lyrics in each songs. They have words that feels like a slap on my face but they do it with a bright smile and the weird thing is I like it a lot.

Julie and the Phantoms: Season 1 (From the Netflix Original Series)

This is the jackpot that I got in 2020. I'm not a fan of any musical series before but this one really got me so good. The series is GREAT. The songs is EVEN MORE GREAT. I keep both re-watching the series and repeating some of the songs from the album. It feels like I got an invisible push of energy whenever I listening them. The only bad thing from this album is it gives me a hard time to pick up favorite songs.

This album is like a gentle wind that soothing me down. The lyrics are gender-neutral. Again, it impossible for me to only choose one favorite song. This is the perfect friend for me during those painful days of 2020. Well yeah I cried too during one of the songs (The Evening) because it made me remember a friend that I lost.

Folklore & Evermore by Taylor Swift

Do I still have the words for these two? Nah, y'all know in what way the two save us. Listening to all the songs in these two albums is just like reading a lot of books and feeling the different trait of each protagonist in the story. Some songs make me put myself as the protagonist itself and some other songs make me enjoy the ride and waiting what will happen at the end. It such a new feeling for me because I haven't listened a lot of Taylor's songs before (only 3 until 5 songs, I think) and now she amazed me with the way the lyrics are written in these two albums. Then here comes the hardest part which is to pick some favorite from these two.

Just wanted to do that summary of art thing. And I needed to throw that progress gif too cause... yeah.

2020 was a hell of a year, and while we still have 11 days to beat it, I feel I can already take a deep breath and be at least a little proud this time. There’s still a lot to finish, to keep fighting for, and to improve (art-wise, self-wise, and society-wise), but things never felt as clear as they are now, at least to me.

These last three are my Yuletide stories, which are still anonymous. Hint: one bumps one of the other fandoms to 2, one is one of my oldest fandoms, and one is a new fandom to me.

So my writing was still Good Omens dominated, but due to falling back into exchange fandom (ironically due to Tumblr/Discord style exchanges reminding me of how much I love Dreamwidth/AO3 style exchanges), and Exchanges After Dark being so bloody enabling, my output diversified a lot. M/m dominated, with a good sprinkling of f/f.

Standouts are Original Work--I discovered I love writing Original Work to specifications--and Deep Space 9, for which I had just written some femslash back way before AO3. My burning love of Garak/Bashir was reignited and I want to write them ALL the fic. Also, having got over my initial fear of writing Wodehouse, I think there will be a lot of Mike/Psmith in my future. The DARLINGS.

I received some utterly amazing and brilliant gifts.

Deepest regrets: I started no less than six Revolutionary Girl Utena fics and didn't finish any. I got all tangled up in my head about charity auction pressure and trying to make it perfect, tehre was peripheral wank and bullying that really upset me, and then I got guilt paralysis. My new year's resolution is just to relax and write it. I really really love Juri/Shiori, it should be easy if I just get out of my own way.

Plans for next year: Juri/Shiori first.

Exchange wise, I've signed up to Bulletproof, Past Imperfect Future Unknown and Five Figure Fan Exchange. I'll definitely be doing Chocolate Box, Just Married, Yuletide, AU Exchange, Multifandom Trope Fest, IdProQuo and any historical based flashes that run. Also I'm really hoping We Heart Bellies runs again, that was a blast.

I want to write all the DS9, Psmith and, of course, Good Omens. I want to try writing Nero Wolfe (I had some spectacular gifts in the fandom for Yuletide) and maybe return to writing Blake's 7 and Xena. And I want to write Wonder Woman Diana/Barbara.
