intentions for Oct 26 - Nov 1:
mornings - i will get up every morning at 615; i will not get back into bed but instead will brush my teeth, get dressed & go downstairs - i will be up before the sun; i will be there to watch it rise - i will have breakfast each morning - i will meditate a minimum of five minutes 3 out of the 5 weekdays - i will get a morning walk in by 11 - even if it’s just my shortest 20 min route - i will be consistent & disciplined in rebuilding my morning routine
baking/cooking goals - i will make chicken broth & use it as a base for a soup for dinner - i will strain & freeze the pumpkin puree i have - i will try tempering chocolate - if that works well, i will find a truffle/candy recipe for Halloween - i will find a mini loaf recipe for when my love’s brother & his partner visit (i found the cutest ceramic red loaf dishes and got 4 of them! i want to do a trial run recipe with them Friday when they come over) - i will find a recipe to make for Sunday dinner as well
self care/self love - i will treat myself to a nice bath - i will use my French press in the mornings to take time to appreciate my coffee making process more - i will limit my coffee consumption overall - i will have a productive therapy session on Thursday
house care - i will dust the living room fan - i will deep clean the kitchen on Tuesday - i will make sure the garbage is to the curb the nights before pick up - i will remind my love about needing to find a new water set up for the chickens for this winter - i will vacuum the whole house at least twice this week (Tuesday & Friday or Tuesday, Thurs, Saturday)
my intentions with this blog
I’m not going to lie to you, I definitely feel like a grandma or a karen for writing out my “intentions,” especially for something like a TUMBLR, but I’m so tired of restarting everything. I’ve had about a million interests, a billion tumblrs, and a zillion fallbacks. enough!! with that being said, here are my intentions:
to focus on bettering myself
to at least gather tips from the studyblr community, even if I don’t join their ranks
to engage in ridiculous heart emoji memes
to interact with the most niche literature and history memes that I can
to surround myself with shakespeare references
to gather bomb reaction images and memes for my reference
let this list serve as my constant reminder that I can be something better every single day
i'm setting some intentions right the fuck now
by the end of July...
100 instagram followers
at least one more tarot reading purchased from my shop
create one new offering for my shop, preferably non-tarot related
the old story where i dont have my desires will dissolve
Nostalgia, Loneliness and Graduation
It's the season of graduation, students are flocking to stages and streets in caps and gowns to photograph this momentous occasion in life. It is not often that we get to mark something as complete in such a definitive sense, so congratulations on all the graduates and their journeys ahead.
During this time, my own graduation and degree returns to me anew. I graduated high school in 2018 and university in 2022. Here I am in 2023, having to have left my master's due to lack of housing and thus moving to another continent, feeling an array of emotions. Maybe aspects of my heavy heart is driven by sadness that I am past what are often quoted as the best years of your life, or maybe I am feeling purposeless without having an academy to call home. Potentially what weighs heavy is the loneliness of no longer being the shortest walk from my friends' front doors.
I am fond of many of my experiences, opportunities and of course friends, but I can't help but wish I could do it again, do it better. The pandemic meant I had to think on my feet and readjust my path every few months. Courses were canceled, labs shut down, emails were sent with wishes for health. I was incredibly lucky that even in hindsight, my journey was an impressive one. Between interning at the United Nations in New York City in the latter half of 2020 and volunteering for every lab opportunity upon my return to the Netherlands to complete my bachelor, my CV not only had no gaps, it was star-studded.
However, that CV was not enough to push me to the top of the application lists for (science) communication and literature opportunities. It leaves me asking myself, what could I have done better? What more could I have added to my roster to call attention to myself in the application process? There are few correct answers here, after all, these processes are fluid and seldom follow a predictable structure. In many ways, luck is our greatest ally and worst foe.
It is a somber feeling to look back on my "greatest years" and only count my credits as regrets. I don't want to do that, although it is a difficult habit to break. So rather than break, I replace, with my future intentions. With this blog I work towards improving my writing, my online presence, my network. It is also my promise to work towards tomorrow so that when I look back, it will be in fondness rather than concern. I wish for my nostalgia to be kind and loving, not bitter as it often is now.
Congratulations new graduates, my advice as someone looking back: Say yes to everything you're curious about, and no to everyone who attempts to restrict you.
I hadn’t expected to feel so vulnerable creating this blog. I started it because my goal to become a science communicator/editor often requires proof of proficiency in social media. I chose Tumblr for a number of reasons: it allows for a range of post formats, the audience it draws is widely varied in their interests, I’m familiar with it and respect its values, I personally really enjoy using Tumblr, etc. The skills I can learn and display on Tumblr are transferable to many other social media platforms, photos and images on Instagram, short text posts on Twitter, longer posts as articles in digital magazines and papers, short-form videos on TikTok and long-form on YouTube.
But to return to the vulnerability I’m experiencing; I did not anticipate feeling as bare as I do creating posts that I wholeheartedly stand by but also know I create with the intention of showing future employers and partners. In some ways it feels disingenuous that I’m creating a curated blog to show, however I try to counter that by rereading my posts multiple times before finally publicizing them, by planning posts ahead of time and letting them mull for a while to ensure my confidence in my stance, ultimately making sure that all I’m putting out here is genuine. I try to challenge my desire to post a thought by questioning what drives that thought and what is the deeper knowledge I wish to gain or share through this process.
I want everything I put here to be something I truly align with. In time I aim to build an instinct towards my personal style and trust myself intuitively to create posts authentic to myself. Hopefully this will not only show others who I am at heart, but invite them to be authentic with me in return so that we may work together towards an optimistic world.
