Let's talk positivity- I’m sure people have said to you something along the lines of: “You think you’ve got it bad… what about (insert some catastrophe befalling humanity at any given moment here), just think happy thoughts!” and you’ve probably thought to yourself, ‘Yeah… okay… if only it were that easy...’
The problem is that being negative, in my opinion, is always going to be much easier than being positive. The world around us is a constant exhibit of negativity, think of how many times you’ve turned on the news and it showcased something other than violence, mayhem, or madness… Sometimes it can feel like escaping negativity is insurmountable, especially when negativity is showcased just about everywhere we look, and then you find yourself thinking: ‘What’s the point of being positive anyway?’
I have felt the same way but I realized that I needed to change my perspective. I would watch the news constantly because I thought that it would make me a better adult (Haha…), but I soon realized that I was absorbing all of that negative energy. Eventually, I realized that the only way to cut myself off from all of that negativity was to stop watching the news. Sometimes all you need to do is sever your connection with whatever is putting off negative energy- even if it is only for a little while. Most of us have to deal with negativity in different forms, whether it be from the TV or from people in our lives, so it isn’t practical to think that you will never have to deal with negative energy. BUT you can manage it!
Here are some helpful tips I use to manage negativity in my own life:
☞ First, identify what is causing you to feel feelings of negativity.
☞ Second, if you can cut it out of your life completely- Do it! But if you can’t cut it out completely find a way to minimize its impact on you. For instance, if it is a negative person you are concerned with, who you have no choice but to be around, use the take 5 rule. When you feel like the negativity from the person is about to wash you out: walk away for at least 5 minutes. Are you at work? Say you have to go to the bathroom. Trust me, it helps!
☞ Third, & final tip, breathe! When you feel like negative energies are getting the better of you: breathe in for 3 seconds and blow out slowly for 6! This is one of my go-to tips, especially when I just can’t get away from a negative situation.
