C: One thing I will never understand is how my fellow black men can hear black women speak on the grievous wrongs that we’ve done to them and the only words they can think of is “Not all black men”.

I mean, do we not hear ourselves? Do we not hear who we sound like? We sound like every white liberal when someone speaks on police brutality. We sound like every white person in general who gets in their feelings when one of us speaks about racism. When someone comes to us, making a point to defend a member of the oppressing group while we are speaking about the things they have collectively done to harm us, we get angry and rightfully so. But let us Black men be on the receiving end of it from Black women and suddenly its about hurt feelings

No, its not everyone of the group. Yes, there are Black men out there who are genuine kind and thoughtful. But its enough of us that it’s a problem and the problem will never get solved if it is not talked about. If we’re going to expect that nonblack people get out of their feelings and listen when we confront them with their racism, shouldn’t we do the same?

C - I really think Black women hate Black men. I do. I seriously do. I don’t think most are aware of it, I think it’s just something that we’re all taught from a young age: hate other Black people, specifically the ones of a different gender than your own.

Cuz Black women can and do perpetuate some of the toxic views about Black men that run rampant both in and out of our communities. Black girls were the first ones to tell me I was too “soft” (shit, my MOM still implies that all the time). Yeah, White teachers more than anyone stereotype Black male students as violent and aggressive, but I as well as other dudes have experienced being victims of this bias by Black female teachers as well. Black dudes are stereotyped as being dumb and lazy, and I do often hear Black women make comments that they think are harmless, but actually dig into your mind. It affects your psyche. Outside the community, you’re a violent thug, inside the community, they still see you as a violent thug but you’re not supposed to be and it’s your job to fix how people see you. Oh wait, you went too far, now you’re not a “Real Man” and we get to make fun of you.

Like, that’s the thing I don’t think we, as Black men SERIOUSLY talk about enough (and no, calling Black women thots and hoes when they with us, but bedwenches when they’re not isn’t a serious discussion), and when we do, I don’t think a lot of Black women really take it seriously. We ALL deal with internalized racism, and we all project our biases towards those of genders different than ours. Yes, misogynoir is worse, there’s no denying that, Black men are privileged on this axis. But you don’t have to be privileged to reinforce stereotypes. I just wish we, as a community, could seriously talk about gender specific bias projected on to Black men.

Okay so I have been hunting for a review about Ghostbusters: Afterlife that actually talks about Lucky. But I have yet to see a single one. I am going to attempt to do this subject justice but if anyone else has a piece to add on feel free to do so! This will contain spoilers relating to lucky.

So the first I’d like to point out how they did such a good job introducing Phoebe and Podcast. They had iconic moments that made them likable characters who felt right at home in the movie. The way the story flows between scenes with Trevor and Phoebe felt so lovingly crafted.

Now I say this because it felt like a stark contrast. Lucky is introduced as a romantic interest, and part of her character is that she’s “Mysterious” which felt incredibly lazy and insulting to her as a black woman. They threw in a tidbit about her family having been in the town four generations and it confused me because it doesn’t seem to have any relevance to the plot? (Correct me if I’m wrong)

Then comes the jail scene. It felt pretty gross to see her portrayed as a delinquent even as a joke. It felt like the fact that her father was a cop was thrown into this scene to make that joke seem less insulting. At this point in the movie I gave up on having any hope that they weren’t going to tokenize her.

When they broke into the police station, she stole a cop car and I know that this is a life or death situation but it rubbed me the wrong way.

The final fight scene comes up and Lucky got to kick ass for all of 5 seconds before she is literally turned into a monster. I was so shocked an appalled that this happened, and it happened in such a sloppy way that I was confused until the end of the fight scene if it was in fact her who was turned into the monster.

So to recap: lucky is introduced as a love interest and exotified by the mysterious character arc they gave her. Lucky is then made the focal point of racialized jokes, and then dehumanized and her role as a character never received any kind of characterization. Even her turning back into a human is this sort of tacked on extra.

They did lucky as a character and her actress Celeste O’Connor, such a huge disservice and black women as a whole deserve so much better than this.
