NAHALAT / NAHLATH SHIVAH - ISRAEL
Nachlaot neighbourhood, Jerusalem
Nachlaot neighborhood living
Found this shul in Nachlaot (a neighborhood near Machane Yehuda shuk in Jerusalem. Apparently the story is that this used to be a bar, and it was pretty loud and annoying to the surrounding religious neighbors. So, to solve the problem, they bought the bar and turned it into a shul. Problem solved. And the shul is gorgeous. Eishes Chayil is engraved on the door to the women's section.
I love living so close to the mikve

What is there to do in Jerusalem - 12 Things To Do, that are not "just the touristy Ben Yehuda St & the Old City!"
The answer is absolutely not. There are so many things to do in Jerusalem! I will put together a quick list for you.. Enjoy :)
Shuk Mahane Yehuda during the day: Go to the closed side of the shuk, walk around, taste some halva, get some food in pasta basta or somewhere else, interact with locals, get some coffee. Buy souvenirs for cheap. Go to Azura across the shuk on the Iraqi side for lunch, have some amazing food! Pick up groceries to do a feast for yourself and others at home.
Shuk Mahane Yehuda in the evening: take your pick! Either go to the mizrahi nargilah (hookah) bar, the karaoke kebab place, the arak-fish place, or a boutique bar.. All the produce stores close and it's a street party - I kid you not! :) For more info on the bars, check out my friend Erica's bar map of the shuk area.
Gatsby, Dublin, and surrounding bars downtown: Gatsby is a bar you need to get reservations for (max 6 people). It mimics the 'underground' bar scene of New York from 20s. Dublin is an excellent Irish pub, seemingly a sketchy place from the outside, awesome atmosphere inside. There are bars in the surrounding area.
Ein Kerem: Head over to check out cool houses, walk around in parks, and have a cute cafe experience.
The museum area in Givat Ram: Check out amazing museums, all side by side - the Israel Museum, the Science Museum (great for kids), the Bible Lands Museum..
Get a tour of the Knesset and the Supreme Court. Sit in on Knesset or Supreme Court sessions! (open for tourists, citizens, non citizens.. anyone!! - reserve ahead of time)
Check out East Jerusalem. Yep, you read that right. There is a complete different world there. Get some real arabic coffee, sit in coffee shops, get some good schwarma...
Hebrew University Mount Scopus & the botanical gardens: Go to Hebrew U's amphitheater for a breathtaking view of Jerusalem. Go to the botanical gardens for a tour of indigenous flowers and plants of Israel.
Emek Refaim: Right in the heart of the German Colony, go here for an Anglo-Jerusalem experience. Go sit at cute cafes, restaurants, go into stores, and most importantly, take a walk on the train tracks of the old station, on the street parallel to Emek Refaim.
The First Station: Go to this historical site to get a glimpse of the Ottoman times of Jerusalem. With the full architecture preserved there is so much going on in this amazing center! Enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink in the cafes and bars, shop at artist stands and unique stores, and join community events including yoga, dance festivals, fundraising runs!
The Moshe Montefiore Windmill and Tayelet Armon HaNatsiv: Take a walk on a sunny day at the Tayelet overlooking the hills of Jerusalem with a breath-taking view. Stop by at the windmill to hear more about the restoration of the windmill and the history of the first Jewish neighborhood outside the Old City walls.
Get lost in the streets of Nachlaot: One of the coolest experiences I had is walking in the streets of Nachlaot during Hannukah. At night or day, look out for historical landmarks and some reading about them on the streets!
The first station - where the 'beach' of Jerusalem appeared on a nice April day! :)

That's all for now, and it's not even everything!! :)
