Unlimited Coffee Bar - Sky Tree
My friend said, “We should go to Sky Tree.”
I said, “It’s really hot. Sky Tree is just... it’s just a big thing. It’s really tall. Big. What’s there to see? I mean, really.”
She said, “I know this place nearby that does coffee cocktails.”
“Oh.”
That weekend, we went to Oshiage, home of Tokyo Sky Tree.
And Unlimited Coffee Bar.
Turns out, Unlimited Coffee Bar is more than just a specialty coffee shop. It’s a bar, restaurant, barista training center, and coffee roaster, run by two of the most experienced hands in Japan’s coffee industry.
But you can read all about that here.
“We should get the espresso martini,” she said.
“Yes,” I said. “Let’s do that.”
We ended up ordering two – one with a coffee from Ethiopia, the other with Costa Rica, if I remember correctly.
It was fascinating. The difference each coffee had on the flavor of the drink was immediately noticeable – one sharp, the other fruity. I hadn’t really considered the idea that alcohol and coffee could be mixed to create new flavor experiences. I was intrigued and curious.
“Next up?” I asked.
“Cold brew gin and tonic,” she said.
The gin and tonic was sweet, smooth, and fruity. It refreshed and energized. It felt just-right for summer – a nice option for cooling down and perking up at the same time.
The baristas worked with smooth precision. Their faces wore casual smiles while their hands worked like experienced veterans. It was fun to see it happen before your eyes; to wonder about the mix and how it would taste when it was ready.
“Some of the baristas here,” my friend said, “they’ve placed at the Coffee In Good Spirits competition,” she said.
“Is that a competition specifically for coffee cocktails?”
“It is.”
“That is a most wonderful idea for a competition,” I said.
And I really meant it – it was cool to think that this was a place where flavor experiments were carried out on a daily basis – where high quality coffees were mixed with alcohol, and prepared in such a way as to bring out the best in both.
The potential there is just, well... it’s unlimited.
(sorry, sorry. I’ll see myself out.)

I have always known that at last I would take this road, but yesterday I did not know that it would be today.
