I have read your dragons vs direwolves meta. Rickon is too young to tame shaggydog as he was going wild. Arya have wolves dream but nymeria has her own pack n going feral. I think starks also needs to tame their wolves as they caught on Saturday starks emotions. Robb was shock about how gw was feral. I think lady death also signifies much more than losing a part of soul.
None of the Starks have yet come fully into their warging power. Sansa's was cut short with Lady's death, but there is some residual ability. Arya is already a strong warg. Her connection to Nymeria is still there even though she is far away in Braavos.
Shaggydog seems to be feral, but I think that is a misconception by the characters. Shaggydog mirrors Rickon's grief and insecurity when his world turns upside down. And when he attacks the Frey boys it is actually a sign that the Freys can't be trusted.
Grey Wind as well. Grey Wind distrusts Jeyne Westerling's family and he is correct about that as we later learn. Grey Wind is completely fine with Rainald Westerling who can even handle him, because he is true to Robb.
The direwolves mirror their friends /companions feelings and their instinct is to protect the Starks. In this light I think it is interesting that Tyrion is snarled at by the wolves....
Anyway, as things are now, the direwolves are not 100% controlled, but they are controllable once the Stark in question fully realises they are a warg.
They are still dangerous... But do are large dogs, swords, catapults etc. They are a weapon for the war, sent by the Old Gods, but they are not uncontrollable on principle.
Then there is also the fact that the direwolves are a narrative device to give hints about the arcs of their own Stark as well as the Starks in general.
The direwolf mother at the beginning was killed by an antler, foreshadowing Ned's death by Joffrey Baratheon. Grey Wind mistrusts the people who will be Robb's death. Nymeria attacks Joffrey (an enemy of the Starks), and begins to 'rule' the Riverlands and 'rescues' Catelyn/Stoneheart. Summer attacks the Freys in Winterfell and Tyrion (!) as does Shaggydog, he rescues Jon.
Then there is Ghost and Lady... Many things have been said about how they foreshadow Jon's and Sansa's arc... And I don't think Lady's death means Sansa will die. I think it means that she will get to Winterfell (with an escort) and that she will have the opportunity to explore her other magic - which is singing.
Anyway right now, the direwolves are not yet controlled because the Starks still have to learn AND because their narrative purpose is to show future events that are out of control of the Starks.
If you take the analogy further and think that Dany and Drogon are tied it is interesting that Dany never manages to chain Drogon and that Drogon killed a child that was no threat. I think it means that Dany will never be able to fully control her inner dragon and that she will be the cause of death of children.
