I really need people to understand this.
Asperger’s would be a bad diagnosis whether it was named after Hans Asperger or not. Renaming it “Lorna Syndrome” (after Lorna Wing, the person that coined the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome) would not suddenly make it an okay diagnosis.
Asperger Syndrome is a harmful diagnosis, and was taken out of the DSM because there was no discernible way to distinguish it from Autism. Which one you were diagnosed with was entirely up to whoever was diagnosing you, and sometimes you just didn't receive a diagnosis at all because the doctor couldn't decide which diagnosis to give you (yes, hello, that's me. I am going to have to get rediagnosed with the dsm-5 so that i can access disability benefits, and I imagine I am not the only one).
I have seen far too many people recently asking if we should just rename Asperger’s, and start using it again. If we should separate the ones that can work and live independently from those that need 24/7 care. And like, no, we shouldn't. Regardless of how much support one needs, we still have the same condition, some are just more impacted by it than others.
Separating the spectrum literally helps nobody. Those with Asperger’s are viewed as just a bit quirky and weird, and not needing support, those with Classic Autism as a tragedy in need of being eradicated, and those of us deemed not high-functioning enough for an Asperger’s diagnosis and not low-functioning enough for an Autism diagnosis are left behind and forgotten. No one truly taken seriously.
Most that think we should separate the spectrum are either Aspie Supremacists, or parents and professionals who don't even view LSN Autism as real Autism. I have never, ever seen an MSN or HSN Autistic person say that we should separate the Spectrum (doesn't mean they don't exist, but I am in that community, and I've never seen it). So who exactly does separating the Spectrum benefit?
(Edit: OP has a cognitive impairment, please simplify your comments so that I can understand them, thank you)
