My absolute favorite part of swimming wasn’t winning, it wasn’t making a best time, it wasn’t beating a rival, it was a really good backstroke start. You just feel so accomplished and it’s fun! My coaches always yelled at me to focus more about going out instead of up with a super arched back, but it was just fun to go up and arched lol.

The best feeling in the world was taking off your cap at the end of a race before hopping out. It was FREE!

It’s always fun when the swimmers in outside lanes win, unless you’re the swimmer in the middle lanes lol.

Massive Wave of Cal Swimmers Heading for Tokyo Olympics

Weitzeil, Shields, McLaughlin, Seliskar, Murphy, Mefford Already In

OMAHA – Cal alum Abbey Weitzeil is returning to the Olympics after winning the Women’s 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials Friday night, giving her back-to-back wins in the event. She will be joined by many other Golden Bears for the trip to Tokyo.

Cal post-grad swimmer Tom Shields, a 2016 Olympic finalist in the 100 fly, punched his ticket with a second-place finish in the event Saturday night. His time of 23.60 in the first 50 meters before touching the wall in 51.19 behind Caeleb Dressel (49.87) was .01 faster than Friday night's semifinal performance.

The Bears also finished 1-2 in the Men’s 200-meter backstroke event for the second consecutive U.S. Olympic Trials as Ryan Murphy completed the 2021 backstroke sweep and Bryce Mefford touched second, both clinching spots in Tokyo. Murphy (1:54.20) – the defending Olympic 200 back champion – secured the win with the second-fastest time in the world this season.

Cal alum Katie McLaughlin secured her slot on the U.S. Olympic team in the Women’s 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:57.16. With the win, McLaughlin became the 40th Olympian in Cal's women's swimming program history, and holds school records in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly.

Meanwhile, post-grad Andrew Seliskar (1:46.34) touched fourth in the 200m free after putting himself in contention with a 26.92 split on the third 50 meters. As the 4th-best finisher in the event, Seliskar earned a spot on the U.S. 4x200m free relay.

And the Golden Bears may not be done yet.

Three-time Olympian Nathan Adrian (21.78) kept his Tokyo dreams alive Saturday with a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle semifinals, plenty fast enough to earn him a spot in Sunday's final.

Saturday, Weitzeil showed she was not done when she swam a lifetime-best 24.27 seconds in the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle and will have a chance for her second victory at the trials during the final Sunday night. In the 200 back on Saturday, two Golden Bears finished among the top five in the final. Isabelle Stadden, who will be a sophomore at Cal in the fall, came through in fourth place in 2:07.78. The result comes on the heels of a fifth-place showing in the 100 back earlier in the meet. In addition, alum Kathleen Baker, a two-time medalist at the 2016 Olympics but battling through a foot injury suffered in May, hit the wall in fifth place in 2:08.78.
