The sound of laughter reverberates throughout the car as you drive your best friend Chan around the city, going both nowhere yet everywhere. The radio is turned on to the old rock station and it plays quietly in the background as you keep your eyes focused on the road seeing the street lamps passing in your peripheral vision. You love this, driving around in the dead of night while everyone is asleep, being able to see how peaceful the city is at this time, and best of all is being able to take Chan with you on your midnight adventures.
You reach a stoplight and slow down to a stop, taking in a breath and releasing a loud yawn. Chan turns his head towards you at the sound and notices the sleepy look upon your face. He knows that you’re an insomniac like him but usually he’s the one to get less sleep. However, you’ve been getting less sleep than usual over the last couple of weeks. Driving always made you feel relaxed, and Chan knows that. He knows that you’re trying to make yourself relaxed enough to the point of being able to fall asleep, but you’re also stubborn when it comes to it.
The light turns green and you continue to drive. You roll down the window letting the cool breeze fill the car as an attempt to make you feel less tired. It worked for a couple of minutes, but eventually the exhaustion began to build up again making you feel worse than before. You release another loud yawn as you make a stop at a stop sign, but before you could release the brake pedal, you felt a hand on your shoulder. You look at Chan seeing the concern written all over his face.
“What is it, Chan?” you ask.
“Pull over. Let me drive for a while.” You nod at his request and drive through the intersection to park on the side of the street and get out of the car to switch seats with him. Once you’re all buckled, he puts the car in drive and continues to drive down the empty city street. The usually vibrant city looks so beautiful from the passenger seat. You use this advantage to take in all the sights before you as you felt your eyelids grow heavier. Slowly, you close your eyes, allowing yourself to get the well deserved rest that you need as Chan continues to drive, going nowhere yet everywhere.
