I HATE NATHANIEL BACON 🤬🤬🤬
I went to a presentation/performance at Historic Jamestowne about Bacon's Rebellion and how it culminated in the burning of Jamestown.
Essentially, colonists wanted more land because tobacco prices were going down and already farmed land was becoming infertile. One day, Doeg Indians killed some colonists, so a militia was sent to kill them but also accidentally attacked Susquehannocks who the colonists were friendly with. Mf Nathaniel Bacon had his panties and a bundle and was like "no they're still out there, we got to go to the western frontier and defend it from the H E A T H E N" when in reality he and other colonists just wanted to take their land. A mob started to support him. Governor Berkeley of Virginia, an Aristocrat who wasn't really feeling the economic hardship, was like "No, you idiot, they are our trading partners and there's no need to cause unnecessary war" and declared Bacon a rebel. Bacon said nuh-uh and got elected to the House of Burgess. He evilly twirled his mustache and rubbed his hands, sneaking into Jamestown at night to avoid arrest. He was arrested in Jamestown, but given another chance by Berkeley and was allowed to be restored to his position in the House if he behaved. Of course Bacon was like "yes I'll be good 🥺" but he didn't behave and instead raised a mob to overthrow the government. He threatened to shoot Berkeley and the whole House of Burgess. Berkeley ripped open his shirt shouting "Here, shoot me!" and then walked away like a boss and didn't get shot. Idiot Bacon then decided it would be a GREAT idea to attack the Pamunkey nation who had a peace and trade treaty with the Virginia colony. He and the army chased them around the Dragon Run swamp. Supposedly, when his shirt got wet (all the time) he just put on a new shirt over the wet one like a stupid loser so that he was always wet and his clothes were literally rotting. He took a break to go burn down Jamestown and then went back to the swamp and died of dysentery as he should. But, BUT, after the rebellion many rebels were executed. As the government regained order, the class difference started to turn into a race difference, kicking off centuries of racial violence and bigotry. Thank you Nathaniel Bacon for genocide and kicking off centuries of racial bias that still exists to this day /s
btw this happened in 1675-1676 hmm I wonder what would happen a century later

My apush teacher told us about an interesting interaction between Jefferson and Hamilton.
Jefferson had Hamilton over at his house for dinner or something of that sort. Alexander saw three large portraits and inquired about who those men were and was told John Locke, Issac Newton, and Nathaniel Bacon (?), whom he described as the greatest men who’d ever lived. Hamilton promptly told him he was wrong and that Caesar was the greatest person to ever live. The reason I find this hilarious is because afterwards, Jefferson saw this as another reason why Hamilton was dangerous to the U.S. because he looked up to a dictator which is even better when you remember Hamilton being a monarchist. The teacher then told us that some historians believe Hamilton only said this to be a prick in Jefferson’s ass.
