(7:37 p.m.) "Mommy," your son whispered from your side, cheeks squishing against your tummy as his hands circled around your waist.

"Yes, honey?" you looked away from the television playing and down to your son. His shoulders lift up slightly and sniffles followed. "Baby, why are you crying?" You lift him up and sat him down on your lap, facing you.

Your son wiped away his tears before answering. "Do you think Daddy will be home today? He promised."

Oh, so that was the reason. His daddy was always away on business trips as the CEO. It wouldn't be the first time that Jaemin has been gone for months which left you always worried about his safety. Being one of the top businesses meant that rivals were on your tail, ready to pull the trigger anytime. But it was Christmas and it was supposed to be the happiest time of the year which meant Jaemin had to be home.

You didn't get the chance to make up an excuse because the doorbell rang. Carrying your son, you went and open the front door. Your face drained of color when you saw what was on the end. It was Jaemin's right hand, Jeno.

"Mrs. Na, your husband warned me that this meeting would be his most dangerous yet before we went. He told me that should anything happen to him, I should do all the work in your stead. I know it is not fair but he did not wish for you to be burdened by grief. Everything else is written on his will and I as well as his other men will make sure to give him justice. Some of us will guard you in case anything more happens as he said. I'm sorry for you loss." He handed you an urn, gold and black. December 17th, 2021 was written on his day of death.

Jeno left you there standing, still processing what he said. You didn't plan on crying in front of your son but what he said made you crumble. "I knew it. Daddy will not break his promise. I knew he will be here today, Mom." Your son looked up at you, then, his eyes full of tears but he was smiling, for even in the afterlife, his Dad did not let him down.

“thanks for walking home with me, mark,” y/n says as she squeezes mark’s hand.

“of course, no problem,” mark responds, returning the squeeze. “why couldn’t brian come get you?”

“he said he was already at my apartment and found a parking spot and he didn’t want to lose it. it’s okay though! i’m excited to see him. it’s been a few weeks since i’ve seen him and i’m gonna jump on him the moment i see him.”

mark rips his hand away from her’s and scratches the back of his neck sheepishly. “i don’t need to know all the details, y/n.”

“you’re right, sorry,” she says with a smile as she walks up the stairs to her apartment. mark makes sure to walk with her all the way to the front door and hugs her as he leaves her at the door, placing a kiss atop her head. just friends, mark reminds himself.

y/n walks in to see brian’s shoes near the door, and another pair of running shoes she doesn’t recognize. they’re clean. maybe they’re a gift, but they look a little too big to fit her. she quickly dismisses the shoes and walks towards her bedroom.

“helloooooo? brian, baby, i’m home,” she calls out as she hears a loud thump come from her bedroom. she speeds and bursts into the bedroom, concern on her face, only to find brian in her bed and a girl on the floor next to her bed. she can’t quite find the words to say as the girl rolls over, and she recognizes her as hyunjin’s devil ex-girlfriend, sooyoung.

“are you fucking kidding me?” y/n says, tears immediately falling down her face. “you’ve got to be kidding,” she whispers. “brian, tell me this isn’t what i think it is.”

“y/n, listen to me,” he responds, sitting up as hyunjin’s ex-girlfriend tries to walk past y/n to the living room. y/n puts her arm out to stop her.

“in my bed, really?” she says, pushing her back towards brian. “um i.. i gotta go...”

y/n quickly runs out of the house, down the stairs, and down the street hoping she’ll be able to catch up with mark. as she turns the corner, she sees the mark squatting at a fence petting one of the neighborhood dogs. he turns around to see her crying, still wearing her house slippers and he quickly shoots up to pull her into a hug.

“are you okay?” he asks, causing her to bury her face into his chest and start sobbing. “y/n baby, tell me what happened.”

she pulls back and tries to take breaths to be able to speak, to no avail. she’s forced to tell him through choked sobs that she walked into her bedroom to see her boyfriend with one of her best friend’s exes. that the boy she’s been in love with for the last three years was in HER bed with someone else. that the boy she wanted to marry was no longer hers.

and mark held her while he walked with her back to her apartment, to put her in some proper shoes and get what she needed so she could stay with him for a while. he held her and let her cry in his chest so she didn’t have to see brian and sooyoung leaving her apartment. he packed her bag while she sat on the couch, staring at the floor and crying. gave her a glass of water to rehydrate. he packed everything her cat yuqi needed to stay at his place. sure, he’s not technically allowed to have pets in his apartment but that’s a battle for another day. he changed her shoes for her and reassuringly rubbed her thigh as he was kneeling on the floor in front of her.

“is there anything else you think you’ll need? i packed all of your stuff already, toothpaste hairbrush whatever, and i got everything for yuqi too... do you think you’ll be able to walk? or do you want to call hyunjin to come get us?” mark asks.

“we can walk, it’s okay. i’ll be fine.” she stands up and grabs yuqi and all of his things, mark grabbing her overnight and toiletries bags. he locks the door behind them and they begin walking to his apartment.

“i’m sorry mark,” y/n says quietly, as mark turns the shower water on for her. “you shouldn’t have to go out of your way to help me feel better, or put me back together. it’s not fair to you.”

he turns to face her and cups her cheek with his hand, rubbing his thumb on her cheek. “don’t apologize, y/n. you’re hurt and i’m going to be here to help you. because i love you.”

her heart skips a beat at mark’s words. he’s said he’s loved her before a million times, but in this moment it feels different. she feels herself lean in to kiss him, but stops herself before she goes too far in.

“i love you, too,” she responds. “now get out so i can shower.”

after her shower, y/n walks into mark’s bedroom drying her hair with a towel as he lays on his bed with yuqi. she smiles at the sight and hangs the towel to dry on his desk chair, before crawling into bed next to them.

“thank you for leaving me your shirt to change into, it’s really comfortable,” she says, petting yuqi as he purrs into the sheets.

“actually, it was in your stuff at your apartment when i was packing your bag. i never noticed you took it, but that’s okay. it looks better on you than it ever looked on me.”

“mark lee, if i didn’t know any better, i’d think you’re trying to seduce me,” she says with a giggle.

“i’d never try to seduce a woman when she’s only been single for about 3 hours,” mark responds. there’s a beat of silence and before y/n can say more, mark speaks again. “maybe after like a week though.”

she playfully hits his shoulder and smiles at him. “thank you for taking care of me. i love you a lot.”

he sighs. “yeah, i know. i love you too.”

she turns her back to him so he can’t see her as she silently cries, but mark knows what’s happening as soon as her breathing becomes labored. he picks up yuqi, placing him on the bed next to him as he scoots next to her and slips his arm underneath her head. his other hand rests on her waist and he cautiously pulls her closer to him.

she sniffles, “your arm’s going to fall asleep if we go to sleep like this.”

“it’s okay, you’re worth it.”

she places a kiss on his arm and closes her eyes to sleep.

“your hair is going to be all messy when you wake up if you sleep with it wet,” mark says.

“sshhhhh, i’m sleeping.”

Taeyong was the proud dad of a little girl 

she was his life, he didn't know what he would do without her 

her made sure that she got to do many things

she was in dance, top of her class

he went to every single recital of hers

he always picked her up on time

he bought her almost everything she wanted

“dude, you’re spoiling her too much,” Johnny said one night making Taeyong question everything 

he acted like he had everything put together but he was constantly on the verge of a mental break down 

it was stressful, he worked 2 jobs and had to raise his daughter all by himself

his friends would worry for him

they started to mentioned that maybe he should get a nanny

but he couldnt afford that

when they brought up dating he immediately shot the idea down

he was still heartbroken from when his daughters mom left him

it did a lot of damage on him 

“you need to go on dates,” his daughter started totease

taeyong would simply laugh and tell her that he is perfectly fine

he was surprised the first time she mentioned it 

after hearing his daughter say that a few more time he started to think things over

maybe it was best for him to try and find a significant other

what happens when he was younger was tragic but there was plenty of fish in the sea

he did want to get out there again 

he did work a lot and his daughter was probably lonely and craving for attention 

“you need to make yourself appear more interesting,” his daughter said while he set up his dating profile

taeyong started to laugh at all the things she began to put 

“astronaut, super cool, can juggle 3000 balls at once, makes great pasta,”

“hey, i cant lie,” he said while gently pushing her and deleting what she wrote

she burst into a fit of giggles and watched as he attempted to get out into the scene once more 

after a week or so of talking to a nice girl he met up with her at a nice diner

it didn't work out so well

she was actually engaged but was taking a break from her fiance

taeyong attempted to meet with someone again

but kept missing

he always met up with his dates at the same diner

you were apart of the waitstaff there

you watched with amusement everytime taeyong came in with a new girl

at first you thought he was player, he really looked like he could be one

and the few times you served him he seemed like possible douche

it wasn't until he came in with his daughter one day and she started to make fun of him for not finding a partner that you realized what was going on

while his daughter was heavily eyeing a stuffed toy out in the machine, you approached his table

“ya know, you should stop forcing yourself to go on dates for your daughter. I understand you want her to have another parent around but sometimes you need to put yourself first,” you said while filling up his drink

once done you went to the machine where his daughter was and put some coins in so she could play

“thank you so much,” she said while giggly and trying to win an animal

“Of course,” you smiled softly at her

she was adorable and you always wanted to have your own kids but you never found the right person  

taeyong stared at you as you walked away

he smiled when he saw you help his daughter 

then he thought back to your words

he really didn't know what to say

you were right, he wasn't happy constantly going on dates, it was a waste of money and he wasn't going to find someone at this rate

taeyong couldn't get you out of his head

he had actually taken interest in you the minute he first saw you

you were one of the main reason why he kept going to the diner, he wanted to catch a glimpse of you 

he left the diner that night with a full mind

after some thought taeyong agreed that he would go on one last date before giving up

once again he met up at the diner 

he sat at the table and waited for his date to show up

you both kept looking at eacother

taeyong was nervously sipping on his water

time kept passing by and no one was entering 

you watched him with careful eyes

you couldn't get him out of your head

something about him was pulling you in 

“boss may I clock out early? we aren't busy,” you asked with a sweet smile

your boss went ahead and let you off early

without really thinking you immediately sat down at taeyongs table, catching him by surprise

“what are you doing?” he stuttered 

“no one was showing up so I figured id enjoy a meal,” you shrugged your shoulders

taeyong smiled at your actions

“well , im already ready to order since i've been looking at this menu for an hour or so. Let me know when you're ready,” he said making you laugh

“I work here,” you pointed out while closing the menu right away

one of your coworkers came over and took your order

you and taeyong started to talk about many things

inclduding his daughter and how he became a single parent

“It was a one night stand, we tried to make things work but it was a toxic relationship. After she had the baby she left me a note saying she was leaving and I could have our kid,” taeyong said making you cringe

“thats horrible! you deserve so much better, you're such a nice guy, how come your dates keep on failing?” you asked curiously

taeyong blushed light pink

he wanted to say that it was probably because they all noticed him staring at you the whole time but he chose not to

“i don't know, guess i'm bad at it,” he said making you think

he didn't seem like he was bad at it

taeyong looked at the time beofre feeling bad

“I,,I have to go, I need to pick my daughter up from dance soon,” he said while cleaning up the table area

you nodded your head, not really wanting this night to end

you had really enjoyed spending time with taeyong

he seemed to be feeling the same way

“hey,,actually,,,would you like to do this again?” he asked feeling hopeful

you looked at him with wide eyes before smiling brightly “id love too,” you said happily

taeyong smiled, he laced his arm with yours and walked you out to your car

“Thank you for a nice night taeyong, even though it wasn't planned,” you said giggly and sitting in your car

taeyong nodded his head ”Thank you for joining me,”

he slowly walked away and gave you a bashful smile while waving
