something gorgeous about the bed scene. L motions for someone to move it and Light, amused and fond in equal measure, says “You’d cut down our olive tree? I see my time away has robbed you of your sentimentality.” And only then does L know, will full certainty, that this is his husband returned from Troy.
Staying awake through that first night together to play word games that the two of them are rusty on, but familiar. L asks who Light had to whore himself out to to get back home and Light sighs. “Just a witch,” he says, thinking of Beyond with a shiver. “He reminded me of you.”
“Light missed me so much that he sought the comfort of others? How romantic,” says L, dry and amused.
Maybe then Light tells of him of a possessive nymph that kept him on her island for seven years. “How terrible, to be given the pleasures of the flesh and food,” L deadpans, “while I wasted away waiting for you.”
“She bored me,” says Light, thinking of Misa.
Light is Odysseus because of his hubris; Light declares his name to Polyphemus in a triumphant arrogance and is cast into the storm for it. L is Penelope because he caught Light long ago, and though his net is wide, Light could never run from him.
Ukita as Elpenor (falls off a roof and dies), Matsuda as Eurylochus (the saboteur), Mikami as Eumaios (the swine herd on Ithaca), and Sayu, sweet Sayu, as Polites, Odysseus’s dearest friend.
Near and Mello both play Telemachus. Mello, who ventures beyond Ithaca to seek his father, and Near, who remains and defends his mother from the suitors. Light and Mello kill them together while Near perches on the banquet table, smiling faintly. Quietly—“Mello, be careful. You’ll get blood in my hair.”
Mello shrieks back that he could at least help them out, but he does none of the sort. “I don’t think so. You’ve got this,” he says, and the praise and condescension fuel Mello’s bloodlust even as L watches the massacre, vaguely amused.
“Mello, have you tried aiming with your eyes instead of your ass?” he calls, and Light snaps something back that he’s certainly not helping, and should therefore shut the fuck up. He barely catches Near murmuring that Mello does everything with his ass; he can’t help it.
In bed later, once Light finished the broad strokes summary of his travels, he sighs against L’s side. “Near and Mello have grown up, haven’t they?”
“They’re rather like us,” says L, amused. “Homophrosynes.”
“I meant that Near inherited your awful smile.”
“And Mello, your rage and wanderlust.”
Which is fair enough, and Light is more than ready to lie in bed and sleep for a week. But not before L takes his recompense for the twenty years spent alone <3
