Sam: You know, this doesn't make you any less terrifying.
Ned: Don't patronize me.
About Ned
Ned is rapidly becoming one of my fave characters of TST. I've been holding on for long (because this type of personality is... too alluring to me but I also experienced first hand what it's like as a real person and let's just say Ned is a fairy tale very nice version) but not long enough I guess, it's impossible to resist the charm 😅
The funniest thing is, he's becoming one of my favorite not because I don't know (ok suspect) his shortcomings, not despite them, but BECAUSE they are so visible. When a being whose whole thing is putting on one mask after another suddenly sheds them all - isn't this mesmerizing. He's so selfish I can't help but thaw. So hellbent on saving ONE person to whose demise he contributed greatly (and his angelic boyfriend because YES good people are rare tresures like that and even Ned values them).
But the thing is, this isn't only about self-redemption. Does Ned want Bill and Rob to live their lives happy and safe? Yeah! But what he also wants is so that HE could observe them. Talk to them, do something fun together. I don't believe he's suddenly feeling altruistic. It's first and foremost about Ned, not Bill and Rob.
And I can't explain it but THAT'S the most beautiful, most attractive thing in this whole arc of his. So crystal-clear honest selfishness that pours out as utter devotion to the point he's on a brink of self-sacrifice, something he was DREADING for centuries. Well, I'm all for facing one's fears head on. I hope he comes out if this - at least not broken, but preferably actually feeling better.
I really love this irony of the trickster, the most unreliable character of the whole team to become the most transparent, not hiding even a single shortcoming anymore. He admitted the thing he apparently considered the most embarrassing - that fear of the Source, of death was what's keeping him alive. Now he's just as blunt as anyone can be, aimed like an arrow at but a single purpose of saving Rob and Bill. He won't be reasonable, he won't be considerate, he doesn't care what happens to the world if the world isn't the way Ned wants it to, and hey, one can adjust to a lot, but there are some "wants" that don't bend, and this is one of them. It's "I like these people and want them here, if they aren't - to hell with everything and everyone else". And Sam thinks Ned is unpredictable? Honey, he's the most predictable on the team rn!
I'm not sure what it is about me being drawn to the characters who are... how do I describe it even... they aren't FLAWED, these aren't flaws! Who aren't hiding their shortcomings at all, I guess, but are still caring towards what and who they consider important to them? John, Ned, Yellow. Ah... is it that they're all out in the open, so it's easy to see them? The good with the bad. Maybe it's just a relief of finally not needing any of the social dancing around things. When what you see is what you get. That's sort of my aim, too.
(I may still read Ned wrong. But he's tons of fun no matter if I'm right or wrong. Ah, I do have a type.)
