This is a bit of a random doodle from yesterday I decided was nice enough to post. Does anyone recognize this from a long gone Disney ride?
I used to watch videos of this ride in the early 2000s, enchanted but mostly horrified if I'm being honest. I'm glad I can point to 'submechanophobia' (specifically of submerged animatronics) as an actual term to articulate this fear of mine, but the two versions of this ride in California and Florida both make me deeply uncomfortable and unsettled to my core, but in a morbidly fascinated way. Which is why I wanted to draw my take on this part of the ride, to pay tribute to this specific fear of mine haha.
If you're not familiar with this ride, it's called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage where guests inhabit a submarine that takes them through a lagoon that features various sea animal animatronics, shipwrecks, a giant squid, and the ones that effectively target the fear trigger in my body - a sea monster animatronic accompanied by mermaid animatronics. The ride was shut down in the 90s but for whatever reason, wasn't completely demolished for at least ten years save for the lagoon being drained, but all the animatronics remained in tact, rotting during that time. There's some now famous photos online of the attraction which look like absolute nightmare fuel (to me).
It's not actually meant to be a scary ride, and the way that the characters are designed are meant to be endearing and friendly, but if you look up images of this part of the ride, when combined with dark lighting and camera flash, it easily creates some really spooky shots of these underwater animatronics, so that's really what I wanted to do my interpretation of.

Busting through this art block with some Arospec Caro, a companion piece to my Acespec Johnny art from a few months ago. Green is so hard to work with it but I think I did it. Caro has a lot of trouble with the idea of romance, they don’t feel those feelings except under very specific circumstance, and have no desire too, they are happy the way they are. Of course they CAN catch feels, since I have a whole comic about it, but the circumstances have to be really specific. Like, really specific, like his name is Johnny. They are more of a no-strings-attached physical person in general, but hard to ignore a man who’s known you since you were both toddlers, and makes it quite well known he thinks you are the sun, and that’s very confusing for someone who’s not really felt this way before. Their Facebook status is ‘Its Complicated.’ If I had to pin it down, Caro’s grey or Demi, but still falls under the Aro-brella and I think that’s pretty cool.

I hate that when you’re stressed enough your body just starts falling apart. I think it should realize you’re already stressed and don’t need that and start functioning better actually
I kinda hate that Lucian and Charles have THIS much chemistry without even trying as it seems. Like. UGH! Why do they have to be so... SO! /pos they've had an old married couple dynamic from season 1 and SOMEHOW it didn't change much even after everything
Spoilers below just in case.
Ok no, what I actually hate is how having too much of a similar dynamic in the past irl now nearly prevents me from enjoying a perfectly good and fun fucked up relationship because it hits too close to home. Kudos to the creative team tho, I suppose! Good writing! Very true to life, the supernatural side aside.
Really liked how Lucian blurted out that he hates himself more than anyone. Everything still comes down to himself - he may hate himself but he's still the center of the world, nothing and no one else is more important. Fragile and traumatized core, tons of layers of hurtful but effective (in a certain environment) coping mechanisms built upon it as a protection that backfires in some cases, and a charming surface personality. Seems very accurate 👍
One moment that really got me though was Charles' "And yet I was". It was such a raw moment of vulnerability, admitting "yes you were THAT important to me, actually, before you went and ruined everything". Admitting something like this after being told "I never asked any of you to be my friends" can easily be turned against you ("I never asked for this so any expectations and pain are entirely your own doing, you're the fool, why are you blaming me all of a sudden"), so saying that out loud, perfectly knowing how it may turn out given Lucian's personality, is like painting a target on yourself and going through with it anyway, because it's true, and because it matters, and no sophistic is enough to strike it down.
And that "I will never forgive you. You don't get that part of me anymore. You don't get to live rent free in my head." Brilliant. Almost therapeutic. Enjoyed every second of it.
I like how Charles allowed himself to be angry and assertive instead of just considerate and thoughtful. Like many others, I hc him to be autistic, and too many of us get used to thinking things over all the time, trying to understand others, even those who hurt and betray us. It takes time, for some well into the adulthood, to realize: we have the right to be angry, defend ourselves and stand our ground. Understanding the other's motives and pain doesn't diminish the harm they did to us. And sometimes, while doing so, we don't have to consider every word and every step in order not to hurt the other party simply because of this understanding. Maybe it would be beneficial for them, actually. A sobering experience.
In other words, I love every minute of that conversation, the way it played out. Every reaction was so right, and the resolution felt satisfying on more than one level, the further implications from later episodes considered.
our new job launched its mandatory ai transcription program designed to streamline our workflow and not only does it melt down the moment it has to transcribe non-white customers but it keeps hallucinating the existence of a mysterious boy named dorian who shows up in every third call summary
caller got into a car accident on their way to work? their nonexistant son dorian was hurt. got kicked out of a bar and broke their ankle? their son dorian was the one who broke it. i now spend more time having to de-dorian the call summary than if i had just written it myself. really funny. we're required to use this now
