its not an excuse

although they/them pronouns should be used for everyone before you ask then their pronouns officially, when someone tells you their pronouns and using they/them to cop out of using their preferred pronouns doesn’t respect the individual. This has happened to me even after i verbalized to this other person that I didn’t like they/them pronouns for myself, because I identify as a trans guy and use he/him pronouns. It’s obviously ok to slip up and correct yourself, but using they/them instead of actually putting in the effort to use a persons preferred pronouns is not okay; and this especially happens to individuals who use neopronouns, which can make people feel incredibly invalidated and unseen.
