“Get your grades up, or you won’t be allowed to play on the team.” Were the only words ringing through his ears after the coach had a little talk with him after practice.
“You’re a great asset to this team, and I would hate to let you go, Landry.” Coach Brown explains, shaking his head while holding a clipboard. This interaction seems a bit too cliché for Ethan.
“Well, I suck at pretty much every subject. How am I gonna get my grades up?” Ethan asks, the response coming out a bit fresh.
“You could always try to find a tutor. I heard there are some pretty good ones on campus, and they aren’t that expensive. I heard one’ll do it for free.” The coach suggests, writing something down on his clipboard. Probably some hockey or coach jargon, he says in his head like the action has any significance in the first place.
And that’s how he met Cameron.
Well, not exactly. He knew her from the game earlier, where he just so happened to look her way as she was practically eye fucking him. Or at least that’s how he describes the look. He’s usually one to exaggerate things. He just didn’t expect her to be so… Nerdy. Hey, he doesn’t have a thing against nerds. He just didn’t think one could be so… Pretty, is it? No, that’s rude to other nerds, he thinks, trying to come up with something to explain his stereotypical nature reasonable judgement.
Now the pair are sitting at one of the worn, wooden tables at the campus library, as Cameron takes out her books.
“I didn’t know you were so smart. You tutor as a side gig?” Ethan asks, setting the hunk that was his book bag down on the floor with a thud.
“Yeah, I might as well put my IQ to good use.” She lets out a cute giggle, and it almost makes Ethan mad. Why does it make him mad? He shakes his head to clear his thoughts, running his fingers through his curly hair.
“What’re we learning about again?” Ethan asks, taking out some writing utensils and rubbing his eyes. As hot as she was, he really didn’t wanna be here. Studying was boring, and it was the last thing he saw himself doing on a Friday, of all days.
“Economics. Now open your book to page… Forty-Three.”
As she teaches him, he gets lost in her voice. Her voice is beautiful. Soft, but still meaningful and sweet. All of the sudden, he feels butterflies in the pit of his stomach, and he pulls his hoodie over his head as to hide his blush. Why the hell does he feel this way over a voice?
“Did you write that?” Cameron looks him in the eyes, raising a brow as she pushes up her glasses.
“Oh, uh- On it. What were we talking about again?” She sighs, throwing her head back.
“Do I have to explain that again? Alright- To dumb it down-” She barely gets half way through the explanation before he complains.
“To be honest, I don’t understand a word of what you’re saying.”
“This is base level economics, and you’re telling me you don’t know what I’m saying?” She lets out a breath to calm herself down, rubbing her forehead. “You’re a lost cause.”
“Hey! I’m trying.”
“No you aren’t- Are you on your phone?” She reaches over the table to grab it from him, and he dodges, which results in a small little scuffle. They must be making a lot of noise, because the next thing they hear is a SHH. With that humbling experience, they both slowly sit down in their seats, and then comes an awkward silence.
“This is gonna take EONS. EPOCHS, even.” She rolls her eyes, slouching in her seat.
“What the hell is an epoch?”
“How’re you in college? Just how?” She whisper yells, almost losing her cool.
“Whatever, enough about me being epic or whatever you said. Let’s get to learning.”
“You were the one on your phone, dimwit.”
After a couple of hours, she finally got Ethan to understand the basic principles of economics.
“Finally, you’re at like, toddler level now.”
“Hey- I’m learning, chill!” He flashes his teeth, making Cameron blush a little bit. His smile is so perfect…
“Same time tomorrow?”
“Tutoring? On a Saturday? Yeah no, I’m going out.”
“Going out where, exactly?”
“Some party.” Ethan mumbles, packing up his stuff.
“I don’t really go to parties.”
“You should totally come with me.” Ethan suggests, trying to spend more time with her.
“I’ll think about it. Send me the details.”
And with that, Ethan nods, says good riddance and walks out of the library. Why was it so hard to just… concentrate when it came to her? What’s so special about her? I mean, she’s pretty, but I talk to hot girls everyday. Hell, I’m the Ethan Landry, he says in his head, and then he realizes.
Maybe you’re… Different.
Well, no shit sherlock, but you were one of the only girls that could actually keep his attention without showing off their bodies or something else on the outside. You seemed… Passionate. He liked that. He was getting too hasty about all of this. There was no way he already felt this way. But I mean, you know what they say about love at first sight.
But there’s never been love at first sight when it came to him.
