thoughts on wicked: for good (spoilers)

cynthia just melts (pun not intended) into elphaba like she IS her she’s such a good actress but no one is surprised that’s her caliber anyway. her ability to carry poignancy is just unparalleled she has such depth as elphaba

to be honest cynthia and jonathan are the only fiyero and elphaba that make me BELIEVE they could be in love (all the others didn’t have a chance against gelphie otherwise)

marissa’s acting when boq turned into the tin man was SO good I could feel her terror

the scene with the cyclone was soooo gorgeous and nessa screaming for boq only to be crushed was genuinely horrifying. like I feel like that’s such a throwaway moment when we think of wizard of oz like haha dead witch with her feet sticking out ooh pretty shoes but I felt horrible watching everything that led up to her demise. despite her turning out to be an extremely controlling person there’s still such a tragedy in how she met her end. unloved and searching for an ounce of connection

ethan fucking SLAYED as the tin man he was genuinely unrecognizable. absolutely one of my favorites in march of the witch hunters. I’m so glad he got to show his range. his tin man is top 3 performances of the movie for sure

jonathan is one of THE best fiyero’s I’ve ever seen he has such a knack to adding depth to characters that are otherwise quite flat. I really BELIEVE fiyero grows and changes in this movie. and the way he fucking shakes after he threatens glinda and is just trembling as they go to hang him up made me sob. his eyes convey a thousand micro expressions and unsaid impulses

watching fiyero get kicked and hit literally made me gasp aloud in the theatre and glinda’s ‘fiyero’ scream into elphaba beginning “no good deed” was fucking amazing

no good deed is one of the best numbers in the movie. my heart was literally racing when I was watching it. at the end when elphaba was floating haloed by the flying monkeys it was so GOOD

I honestly did not mind girl in the bubble I liked the idea of glinda being faced by the horror that is boq turned tin man and that forces her to reflect on her life. it added more depth to her character instead of us just thinking of her as a pretty idiot. some of the lyrics were too on the nose but some of them were nice but some of ariana’s intonation made it hard to understand

the little scenes they interspersed w all of them in the field hanging out was really cute and sweet and I wish we had more of that in the first movie

I refused to listen to for good until I saw the movie and if you can do that I STRONGLY recommend it. the camera work was so beautiful and intimate and it’s one of ariana’s best performances throughout the movies. there’s a lot of layers to glinda in this number but you can also just see the sheer bond between cynthia and ariana when they sing to each other

the scene where they’re sobbing separated by the door when elphie goes to sacrifice herself is fucking DIABOLICAL. it is one of the most romantic yet tragic framings I’ve ever seen and honestly really confirmed the romantic aspect of gelphie to me in this movie. I know the whole romance in these movies is portrayed to broader (straight) audiences as fiyero/glinda vs. elphaba/fiyero but how do you not watch that and think it is the most romantic shit ever

the scene of glinda watching as elphaba was ‘killed’ literally had me sobbing like she’s watching the platonic/romantic love of her life fucking DIE it was so heart-wrenching

I looooved that they did not show dorothy’s face. I felt like it was really masterfully done and honestly added so much bc this is not dorothy’s story! we are not supposed to care about her. also maybe jon m. chu will direct a wizard of oz revival and they don’t want to commit to a dorothy yet lol

overall I was surprised how much I liked it because act 2 of wicked feels very rushed. there were moments that were definitely too stretched out but I do appreciate choices like cutting “a sentimental man” to the scene of jeff goldblum looking on in horror as he realizes he’s ‘killed’ his only daughter

also: do not wear makeup that is easily cry-offable because you WILL be crying

also: glinda calling elphaba ‘greenie’ lmfao that little fight scene when they’re going hand-to-hand was so funny

Wicked becomes so much more tragic when you remember they were college kids when everything happened. They were young. They were kids. Kids with dreams and hopes and ambitions and bright shining futures.

They were friends.

Until everything came crashing down around them.

List of things I did like in the movie, because I'm going to be complaining for a while but wanted to make sure people know I didn't hate, like, the entire thing or whatever:

The way Elphaba used the whip against the Guards... oh someone sedate me... good lord

The line of Elphaba saying "not you too" in the Wizard's throne room after 'Wonderful' to Fiyero was instead transferred to right after 'Thank Goodness,' where he "hunted" her and said some bad things. And in this, she said "even you," which I like a lot more because it shows how based on what she knew from him, she fully expected him to hold out more than some other characters who's names rhyme with Balinda. Like, 'not you too' just means he fell for the propaganda and that she's rightfully devastated, but not much else. But 'even you' means that she thinks it's gotten so bad that the ONE person to stand by her fell to it as well. Also, the way she must have gone back to Shiz to grab Fiyero's newspaper, I'm unwell. Cause, like, that paper was specifically about him being spotted at Shiz, and newspapers don't keep selling years after their initial publication. So she snuck back and grabbed it. OR, she had it folded up in her coat the whole time, which is also cute.

Fiyero actively using his position to usher the other Guards away from Elphaba's hiding spot- he 100% saw her given his split-second side eye to her hiding spot before he said to return.

NESSA AND BOQ'S RELATIONSHIP. Although it was very minimal screen time, their development in those... five(?) minutes was phenomenal. Boq begging Nessa not to sign the law banning Animals from travel, but her succumbing to it and throwing Munchkins in as well as to appease the Wizard and remain 'good.'

Nessa (and me tbh) absolutely thought that Boq was going to axe her when he stumbled out

They got rid of the "well it was like that" line from Fiyero, which I really enjoy. He was always weird for that, but in the movie, he just intensely stared at her. Also, Glinda told them to leave versus Fiyero dragging Elphaba out, which as Glinda's #1 hater (me no no like bullies and ppl who are a-okay w/ fascism until it bites them) was very nice. Like both Fiyero and Elphaba honestly looked like they expected Glinda to come with them, but nope.

I wish they had more domestic time in ALAYM, because I honestly thought we would get it due to Fiyero's mirror and toothbrush in the website, BUT!! It was phenomenal nonetheless. The way Elphaba teases Fiyero and he chases her around... how he deliberately kneels before her... how he told her she's beautiful after he saw the propaganda, how it must be effecting her, and went, "Well, this just won't do!" and how she didn't believe him and he made her believe him... hnnnnng

THE TORNADO. Actually cool as fuck.

I enjoyed Glinda using the Animals to do her hair and such, plus the butterflies. Although the film didn't really touch up beyond that? Like I would have assumed Elphaba would be angry, since Glinda is just aesthetically harming the Animals, but whatever

NGD was beyond phenominal

ALSO ALSO ALSO. The way that when Elphaba sings NGD, she has flashes of Fiyero being tortured- but in black and white. Because, obviously, we all know the Wicked Witch's origin in TWOO, which is famously going from black and white (technically sepia but you get the idea) to color. And so, when Elphaba is through with being good, and embracing the title of the Wicked Witch, it shows her breaking point (Fiyero) in black and white to symbolize that switch.

FIYERO SHAKING THE ENTIRE TIME HE HELD GLINDA AT GUN POINT. "If its so good for him why is he trembling."

A little crumb of Fiyero and Chistery alliance, though there really should have been more.

I'm laughing at everyone who insisted that Elphaba continuously went to go see Glinda and whatnot, because now we know that the first time in five years Elphaba saw Glinda was strictly after she thought Fiyero betrayed her and then she saw the posters. Because Glinda kept something akin to the "thank Oz you're alive" line, and it really read as them reuniting for the first time.

The Wizard talking about how nobody will believe Elphaba, or even himself because they'll see what they want to see

I feel bad for Elphaba, she finally allied with the Wizard and Glinda immediately starts talking about getting married n' shit.

Okay so I don’t usually post about Boq. But I fear people gotta cut the man some SLACK. Like, he has every right to hate Elphaba. Well, every right in the sense of what he knows to be true. This is his life:

> You do. You feel bad, but hurting her would feel worse.

> The girl you’re dating has a magical green sister. She’s the favorite student of a well esteemed sorceress in the same social circles as your monarch

> The sister you’re dating becomes a dictator to your land. You are her personal slave

> You finally get a chance to escape (or what you perceived as one), try to

> Is told it was magical terrorist sister

AND THEN, if we’re including TWOO infrences

> You make friends with a little girl running from the terrorist who has the dictators shoes

> She is kidnapped by terrorist

Like of COURSE my man is gonna start March of the Witch Hunters. It’s a shame, but in all of Act 2, Boq is through and through a victim of manipulation. Hate him in Act 1 all you want, but Act 2 ain’t his fault
