"I am now a member of an endangered species."
I think these are words that haunt everyone that was on the bridge when Spock recorded his Acting Captains Log after Vulcan was destroyed.
"Acting Captain's Log Stardate 2258.42. We have had no word from Captain Pike; I have therefore classified him as a hostage of the war criminal known as Nero. Nero, who has destroyed my home planet and most of its six billion inhabitants. While the essence of our culture has been saved in the elders who now reside upon this ship... I estimate no more than ten thousand have survived. I am now a member of an endangered species."
Everyone on that ship saw Spock as this immovable force. The people on the bridge had been working closely with him since Pike went over to the Narada. Always the thinker, his entire being rooted in logic, the one turned to when tensions were high because he had the ability to think above all else.
I can only imagine what was going through Uhura's head as she followed him into the elevator and hugged him and his hands shook as he hugged her back. His words, "I need everyone to continue performing admirably" had to sting but a part of her understood Spock needed things to be as close to normal as possible. He needed a strong crew to support him as he tried to navigate a situation no one could have been prepared for.
The crew on the bridge probably stood in silence, jaws set as those words swam around their minds. Spock's people were mostly gone now. He was with them, desperately attempting to fulfill his promises to Starfleet and Captain Pike. They knew that Spock would be torn apart with grief if he were human, anger and sadness making it impossible for him to command the Enterprise, each of them terrified of the next few hours because if Spock broke they didn't know what would happen.
Yes, if Spock were human he would have shattered into a million pieces. That was the most terrifying thing of all. Spock had been nothing but a steady presence. Always there to think logically when no one else could. The mere concept of his breakdown was almost too much to ponder.
I am now a member of an endangered species.
It rings through their heads even as Kirk takes his seat in the chair. They can't help but think that it was never supposed to be this way.
