Roger Pettet died today. I didn’t know him well, but like many in the Toronto beer scene, I often saw him at local events, and we had a few friendly conversations over the years about a range of topics, including the time he spent in the UK music scene in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Like most UK expats, Roger had a fondness for traditional pub ales, but he was also a fan of many local breweries. So to toast his memory this evening, I pulled out a can of Nickel Brook Equilibrium ESB, a beer that strikes a nice balance between traditional and modern ale styles. It has distinctive notes of toffee and toasted cereal up front from the Maris Otter and Crystal malts, while the hops lean towards bright citrus bitterness with a slightly earthy and plummy backnote. It seems like the sort of beer that Roger might’ve liked, especially on cask. Cheers, mate.
