lisa, beat the devil.
Emerson biking at sunset, camping along Antietam Creek, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Canon 6D, 100mm. NIK
Came in for a call shift and I’m getting sent home at 2300. I did not anticipate this. I do not have my bike lights.
I’m going to borrow a flashlight from work and Koban it to my handlebars, I guess. Wish me luck. 🤞🍀

... but maybe there was cause for spookedness? I was biking along a relatively quiet street, dark except for the cloud of light cast by my front light. As I came over the crest of a hill, I saw something in the road. At first I thought it was a bag or an animal. As I got closer it looked like a child on a bike or something. In the middle of the road. It was only when I was within ten feet that I identified a person, crouching over a white plastic bag. For a second I thought to stop and ask if the person—she, I realised—was alright. But as I got closer, something stopped me. Something about her position, knees angling out. Or the hair hanging over the bag, over her face when she turned to look at me, never leaving the crouch.
That look was ghastly. Transfixing. I’m not sure if it was just the circumstance, the strangeness magnifying and distorting an otherwise innocuous glance. But it struck me, stuck with me as I pedalled away.
What was she doing in the middle of the road? Should I have stopped, inquired...? I think I care about people. But maybe only abstractly? Ugh. I didn’t stop. And now it seems foolish.
When you're biking on the sidewalk towards traffic at night because the sidewalk on the other side cuts off at various points, and you have astigimatism
