TikTok - Make Your Day
“Sorceress!”
“Kara.”
Ygraine stiffens at the sound of her voice, soft and sharp.
“I was just preparing Her Grace for the ceremony.”
“You’ve done well,” Nimueh murmurs, slipping inside and closing the door behind her. “She looks beautiful.”
Ygraine’s nails dig into her palms.
“Why don’t you take the rest of the day off?”
“S-sorceress, I don’t think—“
“Your loyalty to your mistress does you credit, Kara,” Nimueh says. “But I can handle it. I’ll take good care of her. Promise.”
Kara hesitates, but eventually hurries out.
Ygraine feels the witch’s presence at her back, warm and smelling of lavender. She jolts at her touch, though she was waiting for it.
Nimueh’s hands smooth down the rough fabric of her dress and rest on her hips.
“This is ugly,” she hums.
Ygraine exhales a laugh. “Uther chose it.”
Nimueh’s grip tightens. Ygraine leans into it.
“Of course he did.”
Ygraine brings her right hand to join Nimueh’s, running her thumb along her knuckles.
“I’ll be alright.”
“You should run,” Nimueh huffs, and then, sharper— “You need to run.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you c—“
“No.” Ygraine interrupts, and brings their joined hands to her stomach. “I can’t.”
A sigh brushes the back of her neck. Nimueh sags against her, chin over her shoulder.
“I’m married to Uther in all but title,” Ygraine whispers. She shuts her eyes against the memory of his raid on Cornwall; her forced journey to Camelot. “If I run, he’ll find me. He’ll find us. I won’t let Uther kill my child, Nimueh.”
“But you’ll let him raise it.” The disapproval is clear in her voice.
Ygraine turns to face her. Her brows are furrowed; blue eyes bright with anger.
“I’ll be there, too,” Ygraine reminds her. “Neither of you will be alone.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“Obviously,” Ygraine scoffs, “but you won’t have to. Because I will be there, Nimueh. Do you hear me?”
Nimueh rolls her eyes. Ygraine pokes her. “Do you?”
“Yes, alright,” she laughs, and her fingers run up Ygraine’s back. “I know.”
Ygraine lets her lift the veil and drape it over her face, lace and small golden beads softening Nimueh’s features. She exhales, sending the delicate fabric fluttering before landing once again, echoing her breath.
There’s a rap at the door.
“Your Grace?”
Nimueh pulls away and straightens. “Enter.”
Sir Leofred, a red-haired knight with a permanently exhausted expression, steps inside.
“It’s time, Your Grace.”
Nimueh reaches out and squeezes her arm. That question is still in her eyes—an assurance that she’ll be waiting if and when Ygraine needs her.
Ygraine nods, and Nimueh vanishes into the hallway.
Sir Leofred offers her his arm. “Shall we, my lady?”
“Yes, thank you.” Ygraine takes it, free hand anxiously twisting her ring at her side.
His smile is gentle. “I’m very pleased.”
“Oh?”
“That you will be our queen.” His arm begins to slip as they approach the doors to the throne room. “I know your reign will be a peaceful one.”
Ygraine lets her hand fall and takes a deep breath. Then she nods.
The doors open on a new day.
