do you think arthur used to have a crush on leon when they were kids? i bet he was obsessed with leon's hair and wished to run his fingers through it. he'd unconsciously start fights with leon cause that's a good excuse for physical touch. that's where his bragging and starting shit came from. he was like "c'mon leon i bet you punch like a girl" and leon wasn't biting that cause arthur's a prince he can't just punch him. so arthur would have to get worse to get some reaction and he would say as a bait but also as a disguised reassurance: "what now? you're afraid of my father? i won't tell him cause there would be nothing to tell since you're a pussy". and it worked for some time till leon calmed down and stopped reacting. arthur went through teenage angst about it but with time he got over his infatuation with leon, what was left is admiration, respect and trust.

so when merlin comes into his life and arthur feels something again, he comes back to the old tactics of pissing the other off to get the attention. and it works too good but also not really cause merlin's attention is always on him and yet not in the way arthur wants. so he has a bit of a gay panic about it and goes to leon and the thing that comes out of his mouth as a conversation starter is "do you know i used to have a crush on you?" and leon is shocked at first but then the understanding of arthur's behavior as a kid dawns on him and he just says "oh".

What if Leon wasn’t just Arthur’s first knight but his first in everything else?

His first friend, his first crush, the first person to express how proud they were of him, the first he recalls saying they loved him.

His first kiss, after a shy Arthur expressed that he wanted to know what it was like.

His first time, where Arthur came to the older man after his majority, told him he would love to explore with the person he trusted most and a very caring Leon told him he wouldn’t take him, as that required a level of trust he wanted Arthur to understand in full, but Arthur was welcome to do as he pleased to him otherwise.

His first love. He hadn’t said the exact words, but from his gaze, he knew that Leon saw them.

His first gift. Not a present due to any occasion, but one just because the dagger caught the knight’s eye and reminded him of Arthur when it glinted in the light. Where he gave him his second gift in telling him that he decidedly did harbor feelings for Arthur, then rendered it null and gave him his first heartbreak when he told him that Uther would kill him himself if he found out he wanted to pursue his son.

His second time some years later where Arthur very awkwardly confessed that he did not have romantic interest in women no matter how hard he tried (after an equally awkward conversation with Gwen that resulted in her being very amused at his floundering), and that he was fairly certain Leon was the only one that would do it for him. Where Leon finally touched him where he wanted him most.

And his first (and last) husband. Where the first thing he did after his father was gone was craft the freedom to marry whoever an adult saw fit as long as they were another adult and they shared their sentiment.

Merlin: So, are you two dating now?

Arthur & Leon: Yes.

Merlin: Why?

Arthur: I happen to find Leon very appealing.

Merlin: Yeah, I can understand that, I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with Leon.

Arthur: ☹️

Summary:

When you have a millennium-long history with the same group of people, one is bound to form some strange quirks and unusual codependencies.

Regardless (or perhaps despite it), Leon was seriously underestimating Merlin and Arthur’s ability to hound an idea for one thousand, four hundred years and counting.

And one of these days they would get through to him.
