A circa 1900 pickers’ cottage at Double Trouble State Park in Berkeley Township, #NewJersey. Every year, between thirty and forty migrant workers, including family groups, arrived in early September and stayed until Thanksgiving to harvest the cranberry bogs by hand. They would stay in cottages similar to this one. The Hill-Hussey Stone House, now the Visitor Center, at Kittatinny Valley State Park in Andover, #NewJersey. The original portion of the house was constructed in 1825, using the area's native stone, for owner Sarah Hill. The property and house were sold in 1836 to William Drake and again in 1851 to Albert and Nancy Puder. After Albert’s death, his widow sold the property in 1906 to Frederick Hussey, who added the large east wing and portico. Joseph and Barbara LoRe of Rubicon Arabian Stables purchased the Hussey property in 1985. On September 9, 1994, the NJ Green Acres program purchased the 948-acre property to create Kittatinny Valley State Park. The Company Foreman’s House at Double Trouble State Park in Berkeley Township, #NewJersey. This structure, built circa 1900, was the year-round home of the “head” foreman who oversaw the management of the cranberry and saw mill operations. Double Trouble was originally a company town in the #PineBarrens that contained a saw mill, cranberry farm, and packing plant. The Double Trouble Company was formed to sell timber, millwork products, and cranberries. At the site’s height of activity, it was one of the state’s top 10 cranberry producers. Today, the village consists of active cranberry bogs and a number of original historic structures dating from the late 19th century through the early 20th century including a saw mill, cranberry sorting and packing house, general store, schoolhouse, and numerous worker’s cottages.
