For the whumptober event, can i request day 27 with Luffy?
Hello Anon from 2023 Whumptober! Thank you for your patience! I think this is one of my best works, and honestly would love to turn it into a multi-part story, maybe later tho
Whumptober Day 27
Luffy x Reader
"Hey, you got pretty crafty skills there!" Luffy grinned, eyeing you like a rare rhinoceros beetle.
"Eh? Oh, you mean this?" You point at the helm wheel of the small boat. "It's just uh- something I picked up while travelling."
"Say, my crew could use helm's master." His grin grew wider, and he childishly stared at you with big eyes. "Join my crew!"
"Eh!?"
It didn't matter how much you protested that you didn't want to join, he picked you up like a sack of potatoes and introduced you to his crew as one of their own. A small one, if you may add, he only had five members, if you counted the princess they were escorting. They were barely starting their journey, do they even know each other? Better you don't get attached.
As such, you kept your distance, staying at your post as they ran around the deck. Their laughter mixes bittersweet emotions in your heart, making it difficult to hold onto the poker face you've masked yourself with. The food their chef served with heart eyes made you fight the urge to cry each time as you accepted the plate.
"[Y/n]!"
"AH!" You fell out of bed when Luffy burst into the girls' quarters. "What do you want, Strawhat?" you asked as you rubbed the side of your face. It's a good thing Nami was in the bath with Vivi, you can already imagine the earful the captain would get.
"Come get a midnight snack with me," Luffy said, mischief embedded in his smile. Before you could protest, he yoinked you out of the fallen blankets. "Hurry before Nami gets back."
He whisked you away to the kitchen, crouching once you got in. You stand there, unsure what you're doing as he raids the fridge next to you. You watch him stuff meat in his mouth before he turns to you with a look that apologizes for forgetting you were there.
"You want anything, [Y/n]?" Luffy inquired, his mouth full of food. Any other person wouldn't have understood a thing he said. Seems it's paying to have been around others who have no table manners.
"I-" Your tummy growled, and the fridge light illuminated the pink that bloomed on your cheeks.
"Here." Luffy stepped to the side to let you have better access to the fridge.
"Thanks. Let me see..." Your eyes scan over the contents when they spot a single slice of a pie.
A cherry pie.
Out of instinct, you reach for the pie and bring it out. A ghost laugh rings in your ear as you hold the tin. You half expect the slice to be swiped from you.
"Hm? Oh blegh!" Luffy sticks his tongue out. "You're free to have the pie all to yourself, [Y/n]."
You blinked at him before a tumble of giggles slipped out. "Seriously, you don't like pie?"
"What- no! I like pie!" Luffy huffed. "I just don't like cherry pie."
"Who doesn't like cherry pie?" You see his pouty face and giggle again. "Sorry, I guess it's not a response I'm used to."
"Well, it just means more for you," Luffy stated simply and returned to looking through the fridge.
You laugh once more. "I suppose you're right, Luffy." You pick up the slice and begin munching away at it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since that night, you noticed Sanji has begun to make cherry pie for dessert regularly, and each time without fail, Luffy slipped his slice to you, much to the others' surprise. Usopp stood up in protest twice, complaining that he always gave you his slice after stealing some portions of his dinner. You silently appreciated the gesture, even if it felt bittersweet each time the cherry pie was put before you.
You aren't sure what to make of Luffy. The silly way he operates makes you at jaded ease with its familiarity, yet he carries himself and pushes forward for others, leaving you sombre with how your mind fills with wishes.
You glance at the reindeer doctor peeking from behind the tree next to you. The little guy stared at Luffy, puzzled, trying to make sense of the captain throwing snowballs at Usopp.
"Hard to decipher him, huh?" You said, spooking the reindeer. "Sorry, didn't mean to startle ya."
"Hmm... is it fun being a pirate?" Chopper asked. "On their crew?"
"Can't say, I've only been with them for a few days at most," you answered honestly.
"There you are!" Luffy charged toward the two of you before the conversation continued. "[Y/n], you like our new crew member? He's neat, huh!"
You smile as Chopper becomes a blabbering, confused mess. The captain welcoming the reindeer into the crew reminds you of Pops and his way of adopting his children. Perhaps Luffy is trustworthy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What's the commotion out here?" You stepped out of the kitchen and onto the deck.
"Luffy's brother stopped by," Usopp informed you.
"He got a brother?" You raised a brow.
"Yeah, we were just as surprised as you are." Usopp deadpanned.
"[Y/n]!?"
Wait a minute, you know that familiar voice- "COMMANDER ACE!?"
"HUH??!! YOU TWO KNOW EACH OTHER?!" Luffy glanced between the two of you.
"Know her!? She's part of the fleet I command," Ace explained. "What are you doing with her on your ship?! And more importantly, what are you doing out here, [Y/n]? Why'd ya leave Pop's ship?"
"Tch, you say that like you didn't up and leave to find the same person." You turned away from him and folded your hand into a fist.
Tension swooped into the conversation. The once delightful meeting with Ace and his reunion with Luffy is now shining a grim light on you, unveiling the scarred heart you've been trying to keep from bleeding.
"[Y/n], I have a responsibility as 2nd Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates." Ace's voice is calm and firm, the definition of a true commander. "You, on the other hand, need to go back to the others. It's too dangerous for you-"
"You think I don't know what I'm getting myself into?" You send him a glare over your shoulder.
"I didn't mean it like that-"
"I have every right to find him as you do." You grip the door to the kitchen. Memories flash through your mind, boiling your emotions. "If not more."
"[Y/n]-" Ace watched as you walked inside and slammed the door. He sighed. "Forgive my subordinate, she's been taking this harder than I have."
"Was she close to the crewmate he killed?" Vivi asked, concerned.
Ace lowered his head, his hat shading over his eyes. "She was close to more than our fallen crewmate."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You whipped open the fridge, grabbing the leftovers of the cherry pie Sanji saved. You picked up a slice with your shaking hand and threw it across the kitchen. A growled cry escaped your dry throat as you picked up another and threw it.
Another.
Another.
Another-
"[Y/n]."
The trance broke. Looking up, you saw Luffy with a pie sliding down his head, a neutral line on his face. You retract your hand from the last slice in the tin. Your breathing slowing down. He stared at you. His eyes... never has anyone held this emotion in their eyes for you.
Not Ace.
Not Thatch.
Not Pops.
Not...
Your knees give out and drop to the ground, tears falling from your eyes.
"Luffy..."
He walked over to you.
"I... I don't want any more cherry pie."
Your captain placed his strawhat onto your head and hugged you close. "I'll make sure to tell Sanji."
