post rescue starter call, ft. @lingeringscars ░ tai liked harper; she was one of the few people in the wilderness that tai felt like she could trust. maybe it came with her volunteering for her expedition, and even in the way she stood by tai's side in the aftermath, despite tai feeling like she'd failed them all. tai trusted her instincts, her friendship, and it was more important out there, but things are different here and now. tai has moved on, at least that's what she keeps telling herself and the people in her life so confidently. she has to force herself to believe it otherwise she'll get stuck, and too much time has already been stolen from her, she can't lose anymore.
seeing her here now makes her feel like she's trapped somehow, like her past is coming to haunt her when the reality is that harper is just trying to see her friend. tai doesn't understand it, why any of them should hold onto the past ( even the good parts, the parts that she wants to hold onto — her love for her girlfriend, her friends, all of it tainted now. )
❝ i don't really have time, ❞ she says dismissively, frantically moving around her bedroom as she packs the last of her belongings. she doesn't move into the dorms for another two weeks, but she's spent all summer obsessing over every detail, focused entirely on what's next, not what she's leaving behind. it's all too noticeable, the way she's avoiding looking at harper directly, her annoyance palpable. ❝ what are you even doing here? ❞ she finally asks after a moment, something about her presence starting to eat away at her, closing her in, reminding her that she herself isn't gone yet. her words urge her to look up at harper finally, shooting a glare her direction that isn't unfamiliar — but it's certainly unwarranted in the moment. ❝ don't you have, like, a fucking life to get to now? ❞
