A Guilty Pleasure

I am watching creatures die, and I am actually enjoying it.

Yesterday evening, I had a sudden infestation of ceratopogonidae. That is a very big name for very tiny insects also called midges or no-see-ums. They arrived in my living room through the kitchen sink drain.

This is no-see-um season in Alberta. As the popular name suggests, these bugs are invisible until they are actually flying in front of your face.

No-See-Ums, the biting midge

Ack! We've just discovered a new biting insect that live in damp coastal regions called no-see-ums. Something was biting at us but I couldn't figure out what it was, until one evening I noticed a few dozen gnats sitting on the ceiling above one of the lights in our RV. They were really easy to squish since they didn't take off too fast - and noticed a few of them had blood inside. These are what were feeding on us! Here's a few facts I discovered about these miniscule pests:

They are so small, they can crawl right though window screens.

Unlike mosquitos, they don't use any numbing agent when they bite, so you feel their prick immediately.

Other than using finer-mesh screens, the only other deterrent is DEET, and you need to use a strong amount of it.

They generally only come out in the cool mornings and evenings, unless it's a cool cloudy day and there's no wind.

We feel like we have the chicken pox now. We hunted and squished all the no-see-ums in our RV (over 5 dozen - they like parking near light sources at night). We are only opening our windows now if it's sunny or windy while we are still here.

No-see-ums vs. Mosquitos

No-see-ums or biting midges are the bane of my existence here and they are more prevalent when I’m around fish which is pretty much everywhere but in the house or the van. My hands - just my hands - nothing else, are covered with bites from these annoying insects. What’s up with that? To make matters worse their favorite time to attack seems to be when I am running a video camera and have to be ever so steady.

Their bite doesn’t have as much of a sting as a mosquito bite does. It’s more of a mild irritation but like most people I tend to flinch when something starts to bite me. Right?! Automatic response. Can’t help it. Well, I've had to figure out how to help it and it’s a constant battle. Insect repellent only works to a point.

The fall out of these bites are much like a mosquito bite only my bites aren’t red like a mosquito bite. In fact you can barely see them so it’s hard to put anti-itch cream on them individually so I've taken to using it as a hand cream instead. 

A noo-see-um bite is harder to the touch than a mosquito bite too. It almost feels like a small bb is imbedded under my skin and they itch. They itch worse than any of the mosquito bites I have gotten. In fact, I’ve almost completely forgotten about the mosquito bites all over the rest of my body because I’m so distracted by the tiny welts on my hands that itch non-stop.
