I'm sorry but after an entire year of friendly fandom debates over whether or not Ed looks worse without his beard, the line "I'm sorry my horrible naked chin disgusts you so" is so fucking funny

I've been wondering about this for a while. We know that Ed said at the Academy that 'the beard wasn't regulation, so it had to go', but to me it always sounded like an excuse. Meanwhile, in Fun and Games, Ed says he 'had a crazy notion to shave it off, immediately regretted it' Of course, he was incredibly hurt there, so of course he lashed out, but was it the truth? Which would then of course make it even more heartbreaking, because he showed Stede himself, his face. Ed. And Stede had run away.

But, was he actually made to shave off his beard and he was just relieved that he had an excuse to get rid of it, or did he shave it off and then found a perfect excuse??
