"Something is on your mind."
Yugi straightened from leaning on the balcony wall and looked at the king who stood behind him. "Well yeah...The festival starts today right?"
"True, but it is something else." Oberon moved beside him, looking out over the city. "You may not remember your life before, but your mannerisms are much the same."
"You...My son before," he corrected himself gently, "would come out to this balcony and lose himself to thought whenever something weighed heavily on his mind."
Yugi lowered his eyes and rested his elbows on the railing again. The fae king waited patiently, letting him mull over his thoughts. "Why did you change?"
He turned to his son and tilted his head. "It is my turn to ask what you mean."
"You hated me, hated Yami. Now you want me here during festivals, maybe more, being a royal prince when I don't know the first thing about it. I'm not...Royal. I see the way others stare at me, some don't like it." He looked at his hands, clenching his jaw a little. "Wouldn't it be better if I just stayed away? I can't imagine things are easy for a King either, with a bastard son that's half human."
Oberon's eyes softened a little and he thought about his words carefully. "When I first saw you, I was filled with pain and it unfortunately came out as hatred. I lost my only son brutally and you were just a reminder of that, it felt like some kind of cruel trick. But...After the first shock and I processed who you were, that you were my son by blood, not just reincarnation, I had a realization."
"I did not wish to lose another child." He answered softly. "I would not be able to bear it, let alone at my own hand for my anger. So I chose to change, to adapt, to try and let go of that pain. And... Get to know you. But more than that I wanted you to know this side of your life. The nobles can be judgmental if they want, but you are a Prince by blood and that wont change. That being said, if you....Do not wish to visit, to be part of this, I will respect that and try not to push."
Yugi's shoulders eased a little and he looked out at the view again. "But what if they judge you too?"
"Let them," he shrugged. "I'm King for a reason, they wouldn't dare cross me. Besides," he nudged him with his shoulder gently. "A lot of them are stuffy assholes anyway." He smiled slightly, a smile that only grew when he heard Yugi laugh.
"Thanks Oberon." He, straightening up. "I think...I'm ready to join the party now."
