#bat out of hell #francis durbridge #francis durbridge presents #classic tv #bbc #1966 #alan bromly #sylvia syms #john thaw #dudley foster #noel johnson #june ellis #stanley meadows #clive graham #ann windsor #june bland #david quilter #oh Francis; easily one of the most crime writers of all time. this is classic Durbridge with all the familiar tropes he was so fond of #inc. marital strife‚ murder and blackmail (also telephones; I'm not sure what it is but Francis loves using telephones to deliver crucial #information or plot twists). i watched this a few years ago and something made me want to revisit; this is an undeniably good looking piece #of tv‚ with heavy use of location work on good quality film stock. it also has quite the cast; John Thaw had just finished starring in #Redcap and probably seized the chance to swap the upright‚ fiercely moral Sgt Mann for philandering‚ murderous Mark Paxton here #one particularly jarring moment has the discovery of a corpse set to (presumably) a random piece of library music; quite by chance that #piece is This Man Alone (aka Girl in the Dark) which‚ about a year from broadcast‚ would find immortality as the Callan theme tune.. it's #quite a weird moment and strangely unsettling.

Last episode we had Welsh movie star Ronald Lewis‚ this ep we get Welsh movie star Donald #Houston! The future is clear‚ and it speaks Cymraeg. Actually this has more in common with the last ep than just a Welsh star; it's another #Disturbing one. But where the last ep was a very tangible‚ visceral kind of horror‚ this is a much sadder‚ more quietly bleak kind of upset #In some ways it's an unusual Ballard piece in that it doesn't concern itself with the pleasures (and horrors) of the flesh; less perversion #Than I'm used to.. But then this is relatively early (in fact this is of special note as being the very first screen adaptation of Ballards #Work!). In other ways it is more recognisably his work: ideas of the inate dignity of life and the cruelty of subverting that dignity in #Some way. Here it is an experiment‚ one that feels cruel and wrong and yet does not make villains of its instigators. There aren't really #Any villains here; just waste‚ and the forlorn knowledge that such waste (of potential‚ of ideas‚ of life) brings with it. A glum ride.

Schools were changing and approaches to education were changing with them #This was the era in which the work of Carl Rogers and Bloom and Piaget was really taking hold and the move away from behaviorism was in #Full swing. The best works on technology in education wouldn't be written for another decade or so (once again Doomwatch is ahead of the #Curve) but Spooner seems to have researched his field and in particular the influence of Summerhill School (the experimental private school #Which offered greater autonomy to students by treating them as colleagues rather than pupils and which was in the public eye in the #60s and 70s) is felt here. For all that groundwork it isn't the most exciting episode but it's solid and interesting enough. The end twist #Around the lead student having framed his father as insurance strategy is particularly mean but effective with it
