Though Hits Me Like A Landslide is one of our favorite songs from beloved San Francisco duo Cathedrals, new song Behave has given it a quick run its money. The former arrived after a long excruciating silence in which we found ourselves wondering almost daily when we’d get to hear from Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin again. The pair released an acclaimed debut EP named Blush on Neon Gold Records a few years ago, drumming up endless praise and adoration. Hits Me Like A Landslide, which you can revisit via our feature here, turned out to be more than worthy of that long drought of Cathedrals music. A tidal wave of emotions gushes out of the synthpop epic, swiftly reminding us why Cathedrals is one of the most exciting bands to come out of San Francisco this decade. And now the pair are back with a riveting stylistic shift on sultry skittering Behave, a 90s influenced trip hop, progressive rock, and alt pop stunner boasting a mischievous slink and a sly sway. Late night trysts and surreptitious rendezvous dance through the mind as the seductive song shifts, morphs, flickers, and gyrates with much dusky smoldering verve, evoking the likes of Massive Attack, Zero 7, and Garbage.
Cathedrals explains: ‘”Behave” is a song is for moonless nights and glances in the dark. It’s a refusal to “behave,” and a wicked little invitation to join in. We hope you love it, and maybe leave the song a little less willing to behave.’ Brodie Jenkins continues: "We are so often told to repress, tame, hide, hold back. But it’s so much more fun to break the rules. So the lyrics morphed into an expression of self-empowerment and a cheeky celebration of sexuality and love, the voice of the song is confident, irreverent and fearless." Behave arrives with a lascivious music video, doused in provocative hues, directed by Hana Haley. It’s a ravishing visual accompaniment that reminds me of some of my favorite visuals from Chromatics.
